Well folks, it would seem that all of
our excitement over
Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles might have been wasted. What little in the way of reviews for the game online say it's kind of, well ... below mediocre. They aren't too kind to the game, but we can't say we blame them. The North American release only has three cases, where the Japanese release has six!
- Game Informer (65/100) says "This is a brief and functional title, but it lacks the flair and intrigue to pull off the film noir aesthetic. It's also hard to get over the fact that Jake Hunter looks like he should be ordering Jägerbombs and hitting on your sister instead of solving cases."
- Nintendo Power (50/100) thinks "The game would have benefited from some compelling touch-screen use (for puzzles or combat, perhaps), but as is, it barely puts the 'interactive' in 'interactive novel.'" [June 2008, p.89]
- 1UP (D-) is of the mind that this game isn't even qualified to be in the bargain bin: "Each case is stupidly linear (to the point where you cannot leave an area until you perform the game-moving action), the script is riddled with typos (at one point, a character refers to a mobile phone as a "sell phone"), and the static character art exemplifies the cheapness of the entire package."

My heart is breaking. I was hoping for a spiritual successor to the fangasmic Hotel Dusk. :(

Sounds EXACTLY like Hotel Dusk. LOL
Hotel Dusk is super linear.
A small spoilers here (as an example) ...
Iris comes up the stairs and tell you that Dunning is searching everyone so don't use the stairs. Now even if you returned everything you "borrowed" and have nothing but the clothes on your back and the package (that belongs to you) that was delivered to your room. Dunning will still throw you out (for stealing) if you use the stairs.
Question: How does this happen? Why does Dunning throw you out for absolutely no good reason?
Answer: The game doesn't even check your inventory when you come down the stairs! The game is so linear, you are forced to not use the stairs, otherwise your game ends (Dunning throws you out). This is just one of countless examples of the very linear (and also predictable, after a while) game play of Hotel Dusk. The game sucks so bad, that I sold it.
End of spoiler.
I don't know why Trace Memory was so good, but Hotel Dusk sucked so much.
Peace.

That's a pretty awful example. (And I haven't played the game in a while, but I'm pretty sure you can't return everything you stole at that point in the story.) The gripe with Jake Hunter is that you're not even allowed the opportunity to get even slightly off track. If there's something you have to do in an area, you're stuck in that area until you do it. There was nothing like that in Hotel Dusk.

Yes you can return everything that you "borrowed" at that point. I did (my inventory confirmed it).
You're missing the point, I could give you many other examples.
Another small spoiler ...
At the end of the game, if you search hard enough, you will find Iris on the roof. You can talk to Iris, but you CANNOT tell her who the "painter" is. If you played Hotel Dusk, you know how important knowing the painter's identity is for Iris (I won't spoil it for you if you didn't play this far).
Why can't you tell Iris who the painter is? Because the game is linear, non-interactive, and it sucks.
Peace.

You're in an incredibly tiny minority there with your opinion.

Whatevers Roto, I can't help it if my standards are higher than yours.
:)
Besides, no one sells or cares about Hotel Dusk anymore, except a few fanboys like yourself.
BTW, my comments in no way refer to any opinion on Jake Hunter. I haven't played Jake Hunter, so I don't have an opinion on the game.
I'm just letting anyone on the fence know that Hotel Dusk is NOT all that. IMO, it sucks. I almost never sell games, but Hotel Dusk ... I couldn't even stand looking at the game, knowing all the time I wasted wading though all the text screens, for a mediocre story. Only the art was good, but I could get the art AND a better story from Trace Memory.
Peace.

Oh get the hell over yourself. I couldn't give a flying fuck if you don't like Hotel Dusk, but stop acting like your opinion is somehow worth more than anyone else's, and don't make assumptions about how qualified I am to pass judgement on a game. Just from the way you're behaving here, odds are I've been gaming since before you were born.
The general opinion of Hotel Dusk is that it's a good game that didn't get the attention it deserved. But hey, if you want to lie to yourself and believe that everyone but you has low standards, have fun stewing in your own delusions. Maybe you can dream up a couple of unicorns to keep you company.

You should just quit while you're ahead and stop acting like a baby.
I seriously could care less if you were gaming for a million years.
Everyone has a right to their opinion.
If you are too small minded to accept that, then tough ...

I said you were entitled to your opinion. The problem is you're acting like your opinion is gospel. Well, you can take the Book of BlackDS and cram it up your ass.

BlackDS, I'm trying to reconcile this:
"Everyone has a right to their opinion.
If you are too small minded to accept that, then tough ..."
with everything else you're saying, and it's just not working.
You should probably either both back off, or get in the mudpit and start taking pictures. The latter would be far more amusing!
