DS Daily: Your favorite limited edition handheld

We must admit, we've got limited edition DS Lites on the brain recently. We're wondering, out of all of the wonderful handhelds to pick from, what exactly is your favorite limited edition Lite? Are you a fan of the black Pokemon handheld? Do you enjoy the simple beauty of the Triforce-wielding gold DS Lite? Well, which one is it?

DS Daily: Favorite Pokemon?

With the Pokemon bundle releasing soon (or, like, now, as some lucky folks already caught it in the wild), we figured it'd be pertinent to ask what your favorite Pokemon is. So is it the fan favorite Pikachu? We heard you like Mudkips (lol). How about the awesomely bizarre Hitmonlee? Which is it?

DS Daily: Do you plan on catching this?

Pokémon Platinum will hopefully be arriving in the States at ... some point later this year, but until then Nintendo needs to get us in the right frame of mind for parting with our monies. To this end, the company is releasing the above limited edition Onyx DS Lite with Dialga and Palkia art, along with a pile of appropriately themed freebies.

Our Pokémon-branded calendar confirms that this is launching tomorrow in the States, so who's picking it up? And has anybody else managed to pick it up early, like jammy DS Fanboy reader Tom?

Pokemans: DSVision shows you them

The DSVision content download service is getting some new content that seems extremely well-suited to DS owners: Pokémon. The Pokémon movie series will be available for the DSVision flash card starting April 20 -- though not all of them will be available online.

The first release will be the first movie in the series, Mewtwo Strikes Back, released over here as Pokémon: The First Movie. It will be released as a download for just 500 yen. Strangely, the rest of the releases -- four more movies -- won't be released as downloads (at least, they aren't planned to be for now), but as MicroSD cards preloaded with one movie each for 2,980 yen ($27) Lucario and the Mystery of Mew will be released as a special-edition package containing a DSVision card for 4,280 yen ($39).

This actually isn't AM3's first experiment in selling Pokémon video for play on Nintendo handhelds. The DSVision creator previously sold Pokémon movies on SD cards for play on their Advance Movie Adaptor.

Lucky reader catches early Dialga/Palkia DS Lite

The Limited Edition Pokémon Pack, containing an Onyx DS Lite with Dialga and Palkia art, a DVD, a case, and a poster, isn't supposed to be in stores until the 17th. However, according to reader Tom, at least one Fred Meyer put it out early. He found it on a shelf next to the other DS Lite systems during yesterday and grabbed it.

"I went in hoping to find out if they'ed be carrying them," he said. "I got my answer. :)" This could be an isolated incident or it could be a case of one retailer not getting proper notification of "street dates" -- or Tom could be messing with us. Tom, if you're out there, your Pokemans DS: show us it! And if you happen to live in the Pacific Northwest or Alaska, pop into your local Fred Meyer and see if you can find a new DS while you buy overpriced groceries.

[Update: He showed us it!]

But enough of that. While previous Pokémon Platinum trailers have wasted time showing us Pokémans frolicking in meadows, this latest serving comes with a great big dollop of gameplay sauce. There's more of that weird, topsy-turvy level that we're itching to wrap our minds around, some coverage of Wi-Fi play, plenty of battles, and those five silhouettes of the "new" Pokémon that you may have already theorized about.

You can also hit the break to see the most relentlessly chirpy man and woman in Japan talk us through Platinum's minigames and Wi-Fi mode, assisted by some cute kids.

Limited-edition Dialga/Palkia DS Lite coming August 17 with bonus stuff!

click for larger image

Nintendo sent out a press release confirming the impending American release of the Dialga/Palkia system recently spotted on GameStop signage. The Limited Edition Pokémon Pack comes out on August 17 and includes a bunch of extra things!

The package will contain not only the swank Onyx DS with the Diamond and Pearl cover Pokemans, but also a DVD of an original animated feature based on Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. To top it off (or, more accurately, to cover the top of it), there's a Dialga and Palkia DS case and a mini-poster.

How much extra do you have to pay for this package? How about none extra? The Limited Edition Pokémon Pack will retail for $130, just like every other DS Lite.

Reminder: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 up for grabs

Our latest giveaway has us hooking two lucky readers up with the goodies you see above. Do you enjoy free stuff? Do you enjoy size L t-shirts? Well, this should be right up your alley then! What should you do? Head on over to the official contest post and get all of the details.

'New' Palkia/Dialga DS Lite appears at GameStop

Talk about a blast from the past -- this Palkia/Dialga-branded Pokémon DS Lite appeared in Japan almost two years ago, to coincide with the release of Pearl and Diamond. But it will soon be making a comeback, and at a GameStop near you, North Americans -- Go Nintendo reader Spindash snapped this promotional display at his local store. We've no date yet, but further shots reveal a price tag of $129.99, with the final package including a matching case, a 22-minute Pokémon Dungeon DVD, a Grovyle poster, and a T-shirt. Noice!

Just one question, Nintendo: why no Giratina Lite?

Rumor: New Pokemon creatures revealed

Supposedly, the image on your right are silhouettes of new pocket monsters set to premiere in Nintendo's upcoming cash generator Pokemon Platinum. For those of you with very good sight, that would be them to the right of this text right here.

Japanese site blue skY is reporting that this image is an advertisement from a Toys R Us in Japan. We'd like to comment further, but up until today, we didn't know there were Toys R Us chains in Japan. For those of you who're Pokemaniacs, care to comment on these?

Do they resemble the shapes of other Pokemon?

Fanswag: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Hey folks, it's time for another giveaway. This round we'll be hooking up two lucky readers with copies of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Also, one of those lucky two readers will get a free Pokemon T-shirt that Nintendo sent over with the game. If it isn't your size, we'd suggest you give it to one of your cousins or something.

What's up for grabs:
  • One Grand Prize winner will receive Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (valued at $35) and one Enter the Dungeon T-shirt
  • One runner-up will receive Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (valued at $35)
In order to enter, you must leave a comment telling us what your absolute favorite Pokemon is. You can leave a comment once per day, and before entering, make sure you are a legal and current United States or Canadian resident (excluding Quebec) and at least 18 years of age. The giveaway starts now and ends on Sunday, August 10th at 11:59pm ET. Don't forget to give the official rules a read, as well!

Best of luck to all of you and, as always, thanks for reading DS Fanboy!

Pokemon Platinum trailer: Pokemans as they were meant to be shown

The latest trailer for Pokémon Platinum shows the series' trademark creatures playing around in their natural habitat: a promotional trailer for a new video game. Also the woods and a field or whatever. It's a lot more pleasing to look at than the last trailer, though the excellent production values on display have less to do with that than the method of capture.

Also featured is an absolutely crazy-looking area in which your orientation constantly changes as you walk on surfaces perpendicular to each other, and what appears to be a multiplayer, Pokémon-themed version of Mr. Bucket. Without the mouth. Okay, so it's not like Mr. Bucket at all.

Pikachu! Use Deafening Racket!

Kaseo's Yellow Mouse Orchestra is a cacophonous array of circuit-bent Pikachu toys wired up to a MIDI controller, allowing Kaseo to turn the critter's trademark self-namechecking to create musical compositions. The result sounds oddly chiptune-like, despite being made from voice samples. The video above is a pretty listenable rendition of another Y.M.O. (Yellow Magic Orchestra) song. Hit the "source" link to hear a live performance, which is a lot less coherent.

The Y.M.O. is just one of the components of Kaseo's army of cyborg Pikachus. He also has a spikey Bent Pikachu Limited Edition, whose squeals have been turned into reasonably evil-sounding industrial-esque noise.
