Alpha Dream, the developers of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time for the Nintendo DS used the pictured development DS before the real design was final. It looks like two GBA's with an SNES controller to interface. The game turned out okay, so we guess it worked out just fine.[via GameSetWatch]

Oh! That explains the lack of touchscreen support :(

Not that a game that good needs to use the touchscreen anyways.
Not every game should use the touchscreen, there's no point in making the touchscreen a gimmick as opposed to just leaving it be.
The touchscreen itself isn't a gimmick for all games, it works pretty damned well for a lot of DS game. But on something like Super Mario 64 DS, I found it to be useless, especially when it req'd you to navigate the menus with the stylus.

Well, I liked the Mario Kart DS way, which allowed you to use either. Personally, I was dissapointed because PiT doesnt use the stylus on the menu (as an option), but looking at the dev kit, im amazed the game turned out this good.

The GBA screen has a different resolution than the DS. I don't see how GBA screens would work.

Well the game does not be to be tested during development on a full res screen, only developed at that size, then once the got actual ds test units they could use the real thing. I would guess this was just a hack so they could start early.
