The Nintendo DS continues to perform well in Japan despite being flat in sales from last January due to scarcity. Reuters writes: "Software for Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s DS portable game device dominated the January best-sellers list in Japan on the back of strong demand for games such as Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and three games designed to test brain power, an industry survey said on Tuesday. Enterbrain, which publishes weekly and monthly retail sales data for games and game devices, said overall software unit sales in January were flat from a year earlier, while hardware sales were down 6.2 percent."

(Page 1)2. True the D.S.rules in Japan Nintendo does own Japan gaming wise. But they are trying the same tatics that they use there which, wont do. Because of the cultural differences. Nintendo also needs to open up more to third party companies, and they also need some more mature titles for the older gamers. R.E.4 was a big step for Nintendo and was GTA for the gameboy. BUt we need more than that. A good move would be a GTA for the Revoultion. Also Nintendo needs to give the gamers what they want. Nintendo needs to stop deciding games for their fanbase. Also they need to sent some of they're Japan only exclusives stateside. We had to wait til Gamecube to get a Custom Robo game! Not to mention it was also linear! It wasnt even that good! To win over the Americans Nintendo will need to make some big changes.

5. Paul:
Despite reading it three separate times, I still have no idea what your point is, other than a contradictory litany of complaints that seems to suggest Nintendo is failing despite the DS outselling the PSP in every territory. You say on the one hand that Nintendo's tactics in Japan won't work in the US, but then later say we're not getting enough of the Japanese releases brought over here. Well, which is it?
I think the fact of the matter is the DS so far has been pretty much a best-case scenario for Nintendo. It's absolutely dominating in Japan, and while it's not dominating quite as much in the US, the GBA is still a huge force here. So they've still got about 75% of the total market.
My wife is currently in Japan to visit family and the first thing she said when she called me here is that she wants a DS. It really is just pervasive there; apparently she heard about these brain training games from her sister-in-law, who is hardly a gamer. This is the way you win the handheld war; Nintendo is doing exactly what they are trying to do in attracting non-gamers. Remember, the non-gaming public is a lot bigger than the gaming public (by about 10 to 1). So how do you sell the most game machines? Sell them to non-gamers, that's how. This is the big secret that nobody but Nintendo seems to have figured out.
