Though we don't have any official word, signal or sign of a US release as of yet, it hardly requires mentioning that we're excited about the upcoming Opera DS web browser. A small nugget of information we missed the first time around is that the program will be shipping with a memory expansion pak that slots into the GBA port. According to site CVG, it's meant to provide a "more pleasurable browsing experience". Naturally, we have to infer that this means that more porn can fit onto your DS.Nintendo also points out that the cartridge will not be used to enhance games...yet. Though the extra RAM could undoubtedly be put to good use in some games (see: N64 memory expansion), we're not sure how keen DS owners would be to buy an extra accessory in order to play certain games. Your thoughts?

No way people will want to buy an expansion pack... However... RAM is so cheap these days and so are GBA carts that I think they should just bundle them w/ games for free.

If they bundle it like they did the N64, it shouldn't be a big issue. Sure, anyone who gets the browser (if I read the post right) gets the expansion, but if they bundle it with the first few games that utilize it, then that wouldn't be too bad. The Expansion Pak came bundled with DK64 for the same price as any other game (albeit they were expensive to begin with), so I'm not too worried.

I honestly wouldn't mind paying a little extra for game and web browsing enhancement.
A bit annoying with the 1CM difference on the DS lite though, it seems a little necessary for page rendering.
How much RAM does it have anyhow?

So this pretty much confirms that standard GBA carts will not sit flush in the DSL, what with there being two versions of opera with different shaped gba ram carts. Very odd design decision indeed...

The Nintendo 64 RAM expansion wasn't required for any games. If you had it, though, it unlocked certain graphical upgrades and things like that. I see no reason an expansion pack for the DS wouldn't go over well at all.
I like my DS Rumble Pack though it is a little, well, useless. For $10, it's great. (Mine came with Metroid Prime Pinball, a $35 that should have cost $25. I consider the Rumble Pack that extra $10, as it costs $10 separately from Nintendo.)

The DS has 4 MB of RAM, more than enough to run the games it needs to run. The main issue is processor speed. If they can somehow bundle special chips with the carts like a ton of SNES games did, then it might make the DS that much more versatile.

I think besides DK64 the only other game which required the RAM pack was The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
Anyways, I think this would be a huge upgrade if they packaged it with some game that most people would want. I think if they made it just so that if you had it it allowed for enhanced gameplay (ala Rogue Squadron for N64, which didn't require the pak but I believe if you had it graphics were smoother and possibly the AI was tougher? i don't know why i think that...). But I don't think Nintendo should make it necessary to have to play a game, unless they bundle it with it, or make it like, five bucks. Otherwise, it won't take off.

Unlike the N64 the DS would be unable to apply additional for the primary purpose applied on the console. This was to enable using the full NTSC/PAL resolution rather than just 320x240 as was normal. While there could be some benefits it just wouldn't make anywhere near as significant a difference as it did for the N64 titles that supported it.
Lacking anything as visceral as the high resolution support it would be very hard for developers to find ways to enhance their games without making the additional RAM a requirement. I'd be more inclined to expect support for a flash memory cart to allow entire games to be sold online for the DS.
