We've reported on the surprisingly well-established homebrew community on the DS; there's a whole wealth of wonderful applications you can coerce your DS into performing. To most, however, the prospect of "hacking" the DS is "scary", and despite some of the easier methods out there, it still seemed a little much.Well, we no longer think it could get any easier. The newest device to come out of haX0r-land, the sillily named DS-Xtreme, is nothing more than a DS cartridge. It works as a simple mass-storage device ... simply move the applications or files to the cartridge using a USB connection, and poof, instant homebrew. It comes with a built in MP3-playback app, and it has two bitchin' LEDs for good measure (check out the embedded videos after the jump). The downside? It only contains 512 MB of memory, and it can't run anything built for the Game Boy Advance. Still, for the fence-sitters out there, this might be enough to push you over the edge. Check it out.

The article makes no mention of using the device to play illegally obtained software, but instead focuses on utilizing the device to gain access to the hundreds of useful/cool homebrew applications written by people worldwide. We certainly do not advocate the using of this device for illicit purposes, regardless of what people may or may not do with it.

Sounds pretty nice. Will it be able to read programs from a larger GBA slot media card/adapter? (Or at least allow a homebrew program to load from GBA itself - I can't imagine why this wouldn't work anyway)

The other downside: List price is $130. Yes, that's right, the same price as a shiny new DSLite.
Whereas you can get a SuperCard Rumble($35) + Nopass($25) + 512MB($20) microsd for under $90 with shipping (maybe even less if you look for deals). And it would perform all the same features, as well as being expandable (just buy more microsd cards). And for another $20, upgrade the sc rumble to sc lite, which also plays gba homebrew, and can function as a 32MB RAM extension (for the awesomeness known as DSLinux)

This setup is if you want something that isn't going to ruin the aesthetics of your DS lite. Also, it has better capabilities than the "Extreme". You could use a smaller memory card to reduce the price
Superkey - $25
Supercard Lite (black) - $55
1GB MicroSD card - $40
USB SD card reader (portable, like a stick) - $4
Total: $125
If you don't care about the aesthetics.
Superkey - $25
Supercard SD - $45
1GB SD card - $25
USB SD card reader (portable, like a stick) - $4
Total: $100
These may seem close to the Extreme, but the combination has better capabilities.

This will however play SNES and NES roms with the proper emulators as well as run unpatched nds roms and allows wireless download play with other unflashed DSes. It can also work as a PassMe. It has built in MP3 functionality and you can listen to music with the case shut too. It even had a disco mode too.
Not one of the options that are currently available are "drag and drop" like the DS-X. It's even comaptible with 99.9% of the "illegal" roms out there. With the next firmware upgrade it will be 100% compatible (it won't play the new Pokemon)
There is a review over at gbatemp.net and Kotaku will have theirs up within a day or so.

Great concept, but too pricey and limited for what it can do.
As mentioned above, there are many slot-2 solutions available (e.g, Supercard and M3) and there is also the new Neo2 from the neoflash team which allows you to play unpatched clean backups directly from your SD Card, this works surprisingly well too...
One other slot-1 solution that does almost everything else the DS-X does capability-wise, is the Ninja-DS, although you would have to put up with its large size out the back of your DS.
Overall the DS-X is probably the most complete DS-Only solution for homebrewin' but the asking price is extortionate. I say wait for the Acekard, and the NDSGBA 1:1, which will provide similar slot-1 capabilities, using a microSD for additional space.
