We recognize that the fanbase for video games and anime overlap quite a bit, and so do a lot of companies out there. It's no surprise, then, that popular anime properties get adapted into game form quite a bit. We've seen it on the DS with Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach, not to mention the ultimate in anime tie-ins: the Jump Super Stars series. If you like anime, does this kind of thing have any influence on you? Do you get excited hearing about a game version of your favorite show, despite the years of punishment licensed games have dealt us? Or do you get worried that a game will somehow tarnish the reputation of the source material? And if you don't like anime, have you run across any anime-based games that you love separate from the license? The GBA slot in our DS is often occupied by Sega and Treasure's brilliant Astro Boy: The Omega Factor despite our not being the most devoted Astro Boy fans.

Many of the games based on anime tend to push me away simply on principle of what series they are based on. I've been told the Dragon Ball Z Budokai series is fun, but since I do not like Dragon Ball Z, I avoid them.
That being said, I seriously wish a game company would make a game based on an anime that I actually like and am not sick to death of hearing about. Y'know, something like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Noir, or even El-Hazard: The Magnificent World.

Actually, there's been a Cowboy Bebop game in the works for quite a while, but it looks pretty craptacular.
Personally, I see them as two seperate hobbies. I love my Viewtiful Joe and Disgaea, but I'd never go near the anime counterpart. Neither would I play a Fullmetal Alchemist game.

Technically, Jump Super/Ultimate Stars is based on the manga properties. Granted, most (if not all) of the Jump manga have anime counterparts... Though, story elements can vary a bit between manga and anime (i.e. Bo-bobo has parodies of other Jump manga, like Dragonball, Kinnikunman, and even Yu-Gi-Oh! (with one panel in Bo-bobo actually drawn by the Yu-Gi-Oh! artist, Kazuki Takahasi)).
I've got nothing against anime games, as long as they're actually GOOD games. Which... um... very few have been.

I own Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars, I do like a lot of the characters that appear in the game but I also started looking into the manga and anime of characters I had until playing the game had never heard of. The Jump series is an exception though, I tend to stay away from most anime based games since they usually don't seem to do the properties justice, or I don't particularly care for the anime to begin with.
Alternatively though, I do enjoy anime based on video games, such as Tales of Phantasia or Street Fighter V (and many more), seeing characters from games I love get a cool fleshed out storyline is always awesome!

More often than not, anime licence games are shallow cash-ins with gameplay that wouldn't keep a toddler happy for more than a few days.
Same goes for a lot of movie games, and almost all Disney related games.
It's a real shame, because some anime could make a great game. Where they go wrong, imo, is often trying to make it stick too closely to the series it's based on. Playing through the same story isn't that much fun. You know what's going to happen, and the range of gameplay that can be implemented is limited from the start.
I feel more anime based games should just take the world. The theme. The concept... whatever it is that makes the anime cool, and makes people think "this would be so cool in a game", and that's it.
New characters, new storylines... Maybe flesh out minor characters, or have a story which runs parallel to the anime series, intersecting in a few areas. If more companies follow that kind of cencept rather than slapping together a quick generic platformer/action rpg for profit by association, i think we'd see a lot more anime games worth playing.

I've been an anime/manga fan for some time. I'm always open to games even though they might be based off of an anime i don't care for. Some of the DBZ games have been good although I don't really care for the anime.
I've play Jump Super Stars and liked it for a bit but it got tired pretty quick.
I've watched the Bleach anime and liked it overall and the two Bleach DS games are great as far as handheld 2D fighting games go.
