We were looking wistfully at this phantom Phoenix Wright decal set, as we are prone to do in unguarded moments, and we realized that despite the fact that this particular set was too beautiful for this world, we still have a desire to skin our DS.
But we thought we'd check with you before we did anything hasty. What's your opinion on skinning? Is it universally tacky (er, in the style sense-- we'd kind of hope they were a little sticky) or a way to make your system unique? And if you're all for it, what do you go for? Bling? Anime tie-in? Or something from one of the online stores like Decalgirl that specializes in skins?

IMO they're just like faceplates on the 360: a bloody waste of time and money

I can dig the wish to skin a gadget to personalize it a bit and show off your favorite stuff. It's a lot like wearing tshirts for your favorite bands.
Personally though, like my Apple products, I prefer not to skin my black DS lite because I feel the company's industrial design is just that gorgeous, and I'd rather show it off. It's why I don't put stickers on my MacBook Pro, and I don't see myself skinning my DS anytime soon either.

I'm not a huge fan of decals.
Complete new cases like the ds lite SHOCK! ones look pretty cool though.

I don't usually approve of decals, but when it's of my beloved Phoenix, Edgeworth, Mia, Maya, Pearls, Franzieska, Gumshoe, the special Judge, or a combination of any of the above, anything goes.

I skinned my old DS Phat, with the One Piece crew, and was very satisfied. It made my DS unique, and I got some neat comments when there were gamers around. But after getting a DS Lite, I just couldn't bring myself to mess with the beautiful design. It's just so sleek and smooth and sexy as it is.
Maybe... MAYBE I can be swayed by something cool like the above... but I dunno, it would have to include Edgeworth, the Ouendan, and Dr. Stiles all at once for the perfect overly-dramatic shouting trifecta.

Decals? no. Laser-etching? yes! The DS lite is really not the kind of device that you put stickers on. Call them decals all you want, in the end you're putting stickers on your DS. The DS phat seems a little more sticker-friendly, as it is not nearly as sleek as the lite.
Think about it this way: if you want to decorate your minivan, you might put a sticker on it, but if it's your sports car, you're gonna get a professional paint job to make it stand out.

One thing I don't like about decalgirls and designerskins is that they don't show photos of the actual decals on real DSes, their images are computer generated. It's misleading and makes it seem like they have something to hide. It's hard to find photos online of people showing off their decals. I found a set of photos where someone showed their decalgirl decal and it looked awful, like a crooked ill-fitting sticker. I'd like to see photos of the designerskins decals on DSes.

I prefer my skin to look somewhat "organic" -- i.e. for the background color of the skin to match the case color, and for there to not be obvious edges. This was nearly impossible to achieve on the DS phat, so I had a snap-on hard cover for it (to match my adorable japan-only GBASP snap-on cover). It's much easier for the skin to blend on a white or black DS lite, making me *more* likely to skin my lite. I also only skin the exterior, to eliminate the obvious edging around the buttons/d-pad, and the hassle of trying to align the speaker holes.
Here's someone else's flickr picture of the Decal Girl skin I have (saves me the trouble of shooting it myself!):

I think it looks fabulous on hers and on mine -- so Kristi, ignore the shots you saw before, obviously that person did a crappy job of applying it. I've purchased from decal girl a number of times and their quality is just fantastic.

I just got one of those armorlite cases then shoved a picture in between it.
Here's a poor, grainy image of the results...
