I did used to carry my GBA SP inside not one, but two socks (clean ones obviously). I wasn't taking any precautions as I once carried it loose in my bag and it got a really nasty scratch across the top.
Usually if I'm ever travelling with games consoles and I don't have an "official" case they get wrapped in some item of soft clothing; t-shirts, jumpers and yes, underpants.
I also used to take my N64 round to my cousin's house in a briefcase. It was a nice fit.
