DS Daily: Family friendly

The Wii is constantly hyped as a gaming system for every member of the family, but let's not forget that the DS appeals to the casual market, too. With that said, does anyone else in your family play the DS? Perhaps your mother, or little cousin, or even your grandfather? Who knows, they may even be more hardcore about it than you are. Or, maybe you're the sad, lone DS player of the family? (Cue the song "One is the Loneliest Number.")

My Mum is a casual gamer and is always trying to get hold of my DS. She especially loves Wario Ware Touched. My brother used to be a hardcore gamer (he got me into gaming with the NES) but he only has a casual interest these days. He likes to see what I'm playing on my DS, but doesn't play much himself. My Dad has never played a game in his life and probably never will. My cousins are total hardcore gamers like me and have a DS each.

I, of course have a ds, my fiance has one, as does my brother. My mom likes to try Brain Age or Trauma Center - but we don't let her play that often. She wants a DS but I doubt anyone will buy her one. My Dad used to try to play games with us when we were llittle but now they are too technical for him. My roomie at college loves old school games so she still plays her original NES, but I've tried geting her to play DS - she gets confused sometimes. And then my cousins. They had Game Boy Advanced but never upgraded and I don't think they play them anymore.

I was the lone gamer in my house, until (stupidly?) buying my mum Brain Training for her birthday, so now the DS is quickly snatched from my hands whenever I let my guard down...

I bought my mother a DS lite for her birthday with the implication that she should be buy me one for Christmas last year (when it was the hottest ticket in town). Her favorite games are Chessmaster, Brain Age and Tetris and she plays them practically EVERY DAY.

Me and my younger brother are the only DS players in our family. He and I both live far away from each other, but I love the wifi feature, we often have Mario Kart DS wifi battles.

My wife plays a little (nintendogs, clubhouse games) But my 2 year old is always trying to take my DS from me! She loves the mini games form the "New Super Mario" game and walking the dogs in nintendogs. I wish they made some kind of Dora the explorer game, or some other educational shapes, colors, and numbers game for the DS.

There actually *is* a Dora the Explorer game! I don't know anything about it, though, other then that it exists.

Funny you should mention this topic. Just this past week, a 49 year old friend of my wife was asking about the DS, played my copy of Brain Age for a few minutes, and then bought a pink one a few days later. My mother-in-law, who is 62, also just picked up the Brain Age 2 bundle on Black Friday, along with copies Clubhouse Games and Flash Focus. As a bonus, she didn't much care for the Crimson/Black DS and traded me for my Onyx ;)! I myself am 43 and am a heavy DS gamer, but I've also previously owned every system from the original Game Boy on up. And of course my 15 year old son has a DS Lite (Polar White), too.

But unfortunately he's better than me in most wifi games (although I can still claim puzzle game superiority, thank god).

My mother likes to gamble at casinos, but she hasn't been able to go as much lately. Last January I happened to buy a $10 DS casino game from Best Buy and she couldn't put it down ... which was tough when I got Hotel Dusk. When the Red/Black DS came out in August, I got it and gave my old DS Phat to here with another casino game and Tetris DS. She plays it regularly.

Wow, I feel like we're the same exact person. When the red and black DS came out, I also gave my mom my old phat, along with Tetris!

I really miss Tetris, though.

I'm the primary user, but my mother and sister play Brain Age often, and my father recently picked up My Spanish Coach and has been using it every day for a lesson or two. My sister also enjoys EBA and Animal Crossing, and is getting a DS of her own this Christmas. My grandmother also has one, primarily uses it for Brain Age and Kanji Sonomama (a great translator)

My immediate family is huge on gaming, my mother, my younger sister, my grandmother, and my mother's aunt (great aunt?), all own their own individual, however they are much more interested in the lighter games than anything else.

3 out of 4 members of my household love the ds. Myself of course as the resident gamer, my little brother has fallen in love with Mario 64 on the DS again and my mom loves puzzle games to no end. My dad is the only one to not jump on the bandwagon and that is mainly do to time constraints on his part I believe. If I could get him playing some classic Dig Dug II, Pac Man, any casino game or some Famista DS he'll be hooked as well. But since we live in a one DS house (my brother somehow broke the eject on his DS phat so you have to physically hold the game into the system to play it) adding on more players would pretty much make my PSP get used more.

More than likely my brother will probably ask for a DS lite for x-mas so that will solve that problem and when I get a job (the job market stinks) I'm going to get my mom a Ds-lite of her own because I know she would enjoy it immensely. But until then I have no problem sharing the love.

I know of at least 3 family members getting a ds soon (one gamer, one semi casual gamer, and one who played the my ds for a while and decided to get one themselves).

Touching is good!
