Do you find that you get worse at a game if you haven't played it in a while? Which ones are more likely to get harder from your absence? And are there any in which your performance won't suffer at all, even if you stay away for a long time?

Back on GBA, this was totally the case for F-Zero. If I were to put it in now, I'd probably lose every race. And it's not handheld, but I remember having the same problem when going back to Metroid Prime.

Does beating it completely once and never looking back count?

My skill doesn't seem to deter so much with Ouendan as it does with EBA, probably because I like Ouendan's songs better.
With most games though, it's like riding a bike. Certainly from a year off you won't be able to glide down the street at 15 mph with your arms to your sides instantly, but you can still do it well.
That however, is not the case with most fighting games. Smash Bros seems to be the only one with the bike effect, almost everything else is like I never played it before.

I never completely lose the skill set i gained, although i may lose a competitive edge, a mastery that i had when i was playing the game constantly
Like when i went back to Mario Kart DS right before Wii came out, i couldn't jump right back into Mirror Mode matches and come out victorious. I had to go back to 100cc for a cup to re-acquire a handle on the game.

Well, I came back to Mario Kart DS after playing Mario Kart Wii and I found myself steering it like I would the wheel, but I've got my skills back. And this is the opposite, but on Advance Wars Dark Conflict I beat the eighth mission after a week or so of neglect, only to find that mission nine is going to be harder. A lot. And Mario and Sonic, I couldn't do Table Tennis after Sega Superstars Tennis. Both games are behind me.

I can beat the last stage in EBA on the hardest difficulty without missing a single beat. :D In fact I can do that on every level.
Just thought I'd say that.

I've never been good at EBA so I don't think my skill level drops much from absence. On the other hand, When not playing Guitar Hero for a while, I notice that I'm a little rusty.
It doesn't really have much to do with losing skill as it does forgetting how to play and what to do, but that happens to me a lot when I put down a game for a large amount of time due to frustration or boredom.

If I don't play Smash Bros. for a while, it can take me a bit to get back on my A-game, but it usually doesn't take that long.

Trauma Center plays both ways :(
I'll pick up the game after a month and find the the so-called difficult mission that previously plagued me is child's play.
Then the game kicks me in the ass in the very next operation.

The World Ends With You. Haha, if I put down the game for a whole day (kind of on purpose, to level up my pins), I lose the rhythm I get from playing two screens at once; but even if I've been playing nonstop, I'd still give up on Neku's partner (esp. Joshua) because I'd rather focus on him. I don't like playing the top character on auto though.

This game is so tough in that regard. I just started playing (I'm on day 3) and I'm having a hard time getting used to the two-screens thing.

If you have trouble with that, set the DS calendar forward a week, boot up the game, save. Repeat as much as necessary and set it back to the normal date when done. If you don't like to change the date... you're in a bit of trouble.

Daigasso - I was amazing at this game when I first imported it. I recently got it out again (to replay in anticipation of Daigasso DX) and discovered that I now suck. I have trouble getting through Simple and Clean, which I even programmed into the game.
