The recent press event for the
Tales series gave us a
brief glimpse at the world within
Tales of Hearts, the latest lamentable stunner from
Namco Bandai.
Stunner because it looks gorgeous,
lamentable because the chances of gamers seeing it in North America are
slim to none. Regardless, the full
TOH trailer has been commandeered in the video above, so hit play and enjoy the fruits of an unattainable
RPG.
The environments themselves look stunning (especially the CG), but the characters are still colorful little sprites. One can argue the power of sprites in almost any game, and they certainly command some charm in
Tale of Hearts. Is the contrast between 3D levels and 2D characters too off-putting? Not really -- but let us know if your eyes start bleeding.

Oy, the 2D sprites do clash with the nice 3D environment. Is that because they didn't have the budget of something like Final Fantasy?

The budget thing can be answered easily because they never brought about 15 Tales games to the U.S., including the Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Destiny 2, and Rebirth remakes/ports.

I have no doubt in my mind that Namco/Namco Bandai had enough money to bring these games over. Budget had nothing to do with it. They obviously saw that they would not make a profit with these games in the western market, and that's why they did not get localized. After all, they bring games over to make money, not please fans.
And are you really that suprised that they didn't localize these games? They are all 2D, sprite based games, which is considered passe over here. Half the comments here are " OMG 2D and 3D ARE NO COMPATIBL3" and "WTF THIS R NO FF LULZ." Apparently gameplay counts for nothing nowadays.
And those complaining about CG cutscenes, Namco Bandai has already stated that there will be animated cutscenes as an alternative (which is what I prefer).
HMMM I wonder why Namdai doesn't bring these games over. Srsly.

Kaki, I agree with you completely.
Why are people so resistant to the idea that games that aren't in cutting edge, ultra 3-D might possibly be fun? Good God, that's completely why we don't get so many great games out of Japan here in North America. People just want things to look good.
It's like people who refuse to see movies in black and white. I feel so amazingly sad that people will never see something like "Casablanca" because it's not in colour.
Ugh. Well, at least Tales of Hearts might maybe be coming, and I'll buy it. I think it looks really good.

Ew. Nothing fits together. The CG doesn't fit the art, the sprites don't fit the background.

What do they have? All of two frames of animation per run cycle?

Well , the 2d charecters are okay , not sure how much more I would rather have boxy 3d ones .
But hey , at least the combat looks really fun , I know there are alot of people who like turn based games , but I think that and ARPG that brings you to a diffrent screen is great , much better than FF:CC Rings of Fate .

I have a question and I'm not trying to be a wise-ass or anything.
This trailer has the name of the game in English, has "Coming this Winter" in English and has a splash screen at the end all in English.
Why do they put so much English in the trailer if they have no plans to release the game outside of Japan?
It just makes me curious...

I got the impression that those bits in English were added by whoever uploaded the video to YouTube.

Seriously. At least we get Symphonia 2, although I still haven't played Symphonia tbh. But I really play my DS a lot more than my Wii, so this would be appreciated. Since this is a so-called mothership title, it probably has more chance of being localized. At least I can hope anyway... or maybe I should just hope ROM hackers can translate it or something.

1) Isn't this what Xenogears works with?
2) Genesis and Squall from FF series...
3) Shino, perhaps, from Izuna series? The last name is reminiscient of Arcana Heart.
4) Riku from post-KHCOM?

I like the 3D graphics here - personally, 3D seems to look a little better on smaller sprites. Less blocky. I would have prefered that Square went this route with their latest Final Fantasy remake.
The CGI characters do look a little cheesy - but since it isn't actual gameplay, it doesn't really matter.
