Student-developed titles hit Japan's Download Stations

From late next week, every DS owner in Japan will have totally free access to the first of four student-developed titles. That's because the games in question were originally created under the watchful eye of Nintendo, which is now releasing these at DS Download Stations around Japan. Each game will be available for a fortnight, before sadly disappearing into the ether for ... well, ever.

What's really striking about these is their apparent quality -- if you had told us the above shot was taken from a game developed at a professional studio, we'd have totally believed you (in actual fact, it's from Wakerai no Heya Tsuzuki, a touchscreen horror game)! Equally intriguing is Nan de Momo Koko Yasan, which equips players with a "magical paintbrush" with which to color objects. The other titles are Kiki Master and Watashi no Otochabako.

It's almost a certainty that we'll never play these ourselves, but we'd love to see a similar initiative happening over here. Tap the youthful minds of the U.S., Nintendo!

Non-game wins Great Canadian Video Game Competition

Telefilm Canada announced the winner of its Great Canadian Video Game Competition: a game called MindHabits Trainer designed for the DS. The game is intended to increase social aptitude and create positive feelings toward social interactions, through daily minigame sessions.

Developer MindHabits received $50,000 in January to work on the game after passing the first round of the competition. They went on to best Hobby Shop for Wii and Ambush! Trivia for PC, Xbox Live Arcade and cell phones as the title that most exemplified "the Canadian creativity and innovation that our panel of esteemed industry judges was looking for," in the words of Telefilm executive director Wayne Clarkson.

We'd definitely play a game about boosting our social skills. There's definitely a need for it, let's say. And, even though it doesn't sound like the most entertaining of concepts, we didn't think we'd like a game about doing math problems and memorizing numbers either.

Flash game N+ getting official DS release

Metanet's N is a physics-based platformer in which players run and jump around a big room collecting coins. It's a simple concept that is executed so well that it earned the game an Independent Games Festival Audience Award. Next on the list of honors: an official retail release on the DS and PSP from Atari, to be called N+.

We don't know how the game will be changed, other than the addition of, as Metanet puts it, "pretty cool new features and graphics." Really, we hope it isn't changed much at all-- especially the level-editing feature. Atari, we've never asked you for anything before-- let us make and trade N+ levels online.

You can download the Flash version of N here. Try it out and see how you'd feel about a DS version!
