Post-E3 DS Fanboy/Joystiq reader meetup in photos

First of all, thanks to everyone that managed to make it out to the party! There were a ridiculous amount of attendees, all of whom enjoyed some Call of Duty 4 on the PS3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii and copious amounts of Rock Band and Rock Band 2. It was a blast and, unsurprisingly, the massive piles of swag went fairly quick. It was a wonderful experience and it was a pleasure meeting all of you. Hopefully, we can do this again next year!

For those of you who couldn't make it out there, check out the gallery below. Within, you'll even find a picture of our very own Mike Sylvester (of Revolutionary fame!). He's a local, so thanks to him, but mostly to all of you, for making it out!

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Since we bemoaned Advance Wars: Days of Ruin's lacking marketing push last week, Nintendo has kept us holed up in our bomb shelter, walls trembling and lights flickering as wave after wave of advertisements, massive shells blasted from Leo Burnett's distant dreadnoughts, pound the smoking city above.

Here's every salvo we've been hit with in just the past week:

• an official web site launch (with new media)
• media-heavy previews and several interviews with Nintendo's localization team
  
• two promotional emails sent out to Nintendo's online newsletter subscribers
• a launch event held earlier today at the Nintendo World Store (New York City)
• television commercials on both network and cable channels
• a two-page ad running in at least three video game magazines -- GamePro, Game Informer, and Electronic Gaming Monthly

We stand, crumbs of concrete falling from our hair, corrected. As we promised in our last installment, we're taking a look at that two-page magazine ad for Days of Ruin, a print piece which features flattering quotes from three online video game sites.

Joystiq liveblogging the Nintendo keynote

Our lucky friends at Joystiq are at Nintendo's E3 keynote and all we get is this lousy t-shirt live coverage as it happens. So, set aside one of your browser tabs for their coverage, and keep refreshing! Refresh ... now! Something may have happened! Oh, it didn't. But it will!

It's a nice way to get some quick impressions and readings of the crowd reaction along with the BIG OMG MEGATONS. You know, like Brain Age Kart.

TGS 2006 wrap-up: the DS, videos, and you [update 1]

Now that the Tokyo Game Show has come to a close and you've been assaulted with numerous videos, we can all finally take a deep breath and carefully scrutinize all of this new data following the event. For Nintendo having no presence of their own at the show, the Wii was out in full-force. Before we get into what we liked and didn't like from the show, let's recap on what the show brought us, for both the DS and Wii:

• Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker in-game footage
• A new Bleach trailer
• A pretty sweet Elebits booth
• Kingdom Hearts creators unveil new DS game
• FFXII: Revenant Wings trailer and art
• Heroes of Mana animated trailer
• New Sonic and the Secret Rings trailer
• Best in Show: Elebits
• The TGS booth to rule them all
• New footage for Q? Entertainment's Gunpey
• It's a Wonderful World gets the preview treatment
• Lost in Blue 2 trailer
• More Final Fantasy remakes on the DS?

So how did Nintendo do? As for the Wii, it had a smaller presence through third-party publishers this year. Konami had the award-winning Elebits on-hand for eager attendees, as well as Sega tossing down the red carpet for their mascot with Sonic and the Secret Rings. Nintendo failing to make a unified presence themselves could've hurt their momentum going into launch, but we aren't worried. If we should be, then why?

We can't forget about the DS, either! Even though the DS was literally bombarded with nothing but RPGs, it still had a great show. A slew of new content will keep the already incredible platform from going stale. Those with an insatiable appetite for turn-based battles and potions will get their fix with Square-Enix's incredible lineup of RPG games to come.

A touching talk with Touch Detective's Jamie Ortiz

Joystiq's Ludwig Kietzmann sat down recently with Touch Detective's project lead, Jamie Ortiz, for a little hands-on. Or more likely just discussion, since we're pretty sure there's a court order floating around that keeps Ludwig at least twenty feet from everyone in the industry.

Among other topics, they discussed the challenges involved in translating a story-heavy game from Japanese into English and the changes that had to be made -- and how they tackled those challenges while remaining true to the original characters. They spent a little time exploring the art style as well, and Ortiz mentioned that the style is often compared to Tim Burton's work, but we prefer the comparison one of our readers here at DS Fanboy drew -- the style looks influenced by the work of Jhonen Vasquez, the brilliant and twisted mind behind Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee!, and Invader Zim.

And it seems we're not the only ones who think Funghi is somewhat questionable in shape, though the esteemed Mr. Ortiz did not seem to share our opinion. We'll leave it up to you to decide.

Joystiq: How the star system works.

Have you been a long-time poster at Joystiq or one of its awesome network-affiliated sites, only to see others have stars placed next to their name (or negatives) and wonder what exactly dictates that rewarding or stripping of star(s)?  Well, Joystiq's Vlad Cole has broken down the star system to show you exactly how it works. These guidelines apply to all the Joystiq network sites:

• Value: Does the comment enhance the topic at hand and add new perspective to the discussion? Is it a good question or interesting insight?
  
• Impartiality: This is hard, especially for Fanboy sites such as this, but as much as we loudly proclaim this system to be the superior, it detracts from the discussion at hand. It's OK to be touched with Fanboyitis, however try to curb it as best as you can as to not damage the topic at hand whilst commenting.
  
• Civility: This is just common sense. We all have opinions and want to share them, however as human beings we have the ability to exercise civility, even during the most heated debate.
• Other: Humor, wit, and bribes of cold, fresh chocolate milk. We like chocolate milk.

As such, these are the guidelines followed when hiring Bloggers for the network (you have no idea how much chocolate milk it took for me to get the job), so keep that in mind should you one day wish to kill me and take my place. Vlad is answering as many questions as he can over at Joystiq, but if you post any questions here, we'll try the best we can to answer.
