DS releases for the week of June 2nd

No one told us it was licensed game week. Amidst all the movie property-influenced titles, try not to miss Summon Night: Twin Age if you're interested in it -- it'll be the one with fewer copies at your local gaming store, most likely. Gotta have space for Kung Fu Panda, after all.

  • Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures

June NPD: Nintendo continues to power the industry

Another month means another win for Nintendo. Really, we're not sure what else to say. At this point, we think the only way we could turn this around from a more-of-the-same announcement is if we could convince Reggie to tap dance on a platform made from the fragments of defeated consoles.

So, without further ado, let us reveal the specifics of Nintendo's victory. Hint: they sold more than the other guys. Again.
  • Nintendo DS: 561.9k
  • Nintendo Wii: 381.8k
  • Sony PSP: 290.1k
  • Sony PS2: 270.7k
  • Microsoft Xbox 360: 198.4k
  • Sony PS3: 98.5k
The other guys do seem to be holding their own in sales, however. Everyone may still be scrabbling for Wii remotes with Wii Play, and we continue to be a Pokémon nation, but a few other titles continue to dominate the middle spots. We're okay with that. We like variety, even if the sales charts don't reflect that. They do seem an awful lot like last month's, eh?
  1. Mario Party 8 (Wii)
  2. Wii Play w/remote (Wii)
  3. Pokémon Diamond (DS)
  4. Pokémon Pearl (DS)
  5. Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360)
  6. Guitar Hero II w/guitar (PS2)
  7. Guitar Hero II w/guitar (Xbox 360)
  8. Pokémon Battle Revolution (Wii)
  9. Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
  10. The Darkness (Xbox 360)

The DS juggernaut continues to roll through Japan

You guys aren't going to believe this one. Are you ready? Okay -- it seems that the DS Lite is somewhat popular in Japan, and has been for a long time. Wow, who knew?

Alright, all sarcasm aside, according to the Famitsu Marketing Data Report for June (covering May 28-June 24), Nintendo is the force driving the Japanese gaming market into the stratosphere. Overall sales numbers for the industry were up more than 25%, and most of that is due to the fact that hardware sales are up nearly 50%. Why? All signs point to the DS. For fifteen consecutive months, the handheld has moved more than 500,000 units in Japan. But it's not all about the DS, particularly when we turn to the software numbers. Combined, software for Nintendo platforms accounted for more than 81% of software sales.

With the release of two new DS Lite colors in Japan, it seems likely that at least part of the handheld's success is due to the variety of models available. Not that the DS needs any real help in the Americas, but we're willing to bet that a few new colors might produce results here as well.

DS releases for the week of June 25th

We can only guess someone has designated this the official week of licensees. Two movie-based games are hitting shelves, along with remakes, remixes, and redux titles. What a weird week! But how can we complain when there are several new games on the shelves?
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth Remix
  • Nervous Brickdown
  • Ratatouille
  • Touchmaster DS
  • Vegas Casino High 5!
Hit the jump to see what's out this week in the rest of the world.

[Update: Now with the actual Japanese releases.]

Japanese hardware sales, Jun. 11 - Jun. 17: Effect and Cause edition

With our deepest, most heartfelt apologies to the White Stripes. We just couldn't resist the new album and certain ... parallels.

I ain't the reason
that your brain has no reason
to understand our way
You skipped the daily training
and got shocked when you hit 80
I ain't saying I'm innocent
In fact, the reverse
But if you're headed to old age
you don't blame Brain Age
You're like a PS3 fanboy
yellin' at us
'Cause Sony's price is too high.

Well, you keep blaming me
for what you did
but that ain't all
The way we took over the charts
is enough to give one pause!
You seem to forget
just how this all started
When our faces were sodden
and we were at the bottom
Well, you just can't take
our success
and make it somehow less.

DS releases for the week of June 4th

At last, the long-awaited DS browser is here, but just remember to be careful when you buy -- there are versions for both the Lite and Phat DS models, and it looks like not all online retailers have separate listings yet. Obviously, Nintendo thinks you should just buy another DS, since that seems to be the hip thing to do these days. So who's planning on celebrating this week with a little browsing?
  • Dragon Ball Z: Harukanaru Densetsu
  • Nintendo DS Browser
  • Planet Puzzle League
For this week's releases in the rest of the world, check out the lists behind the break.
