Either someone created the coolest DS Lite redesign ever, or they're just a little too into Transformers. We love the screen that flips up and we're especially fond of the first process of the unit opening itself up. Regardless of what caused its creation, this fan-made unit is pretty slick and something we'd easily plunk down the dough for.
Actually, now that we think about it, how much would Nintendo even charge for something like this?
[Thanks, shak!]

I don't care for sliding parts, they never seem to last. Cool idea, though.

Gotta agree with Brello in that although it looks awesome, it also looks flimsy and easily breakeable, specially the top screen.

Heh, guys, it's just a rendering! My cell phone slides open to reveal a keyboard and it's extremely sturdy, I'm sure such a DS model could also be made with the same craftsmanship.

I think this user-made model looks less compact than the current ds, actually. its fatter certainly. a neat idea. but I think the lower screen is too deeply recessed - and that would, ultimately, get in the way of stylus use.
also the buttons would probably wear out without something covering them - my ds rocks, unprotected, in my bags every day. this design would have the buttons constantly mashed down from every book, and firearm that I keep with me.
yet- whoever made it should still be proud - its pretty neat. just not quite as cool as the current ds lite

Such dramatic music for a new ds!
Looks cool, I'd have to wait a while to see how the moving parts keep up though.

That is the best DS Lite ever! I feel that Nintendo should produce this DS Lite version instead of the Racing Stripe Edition.

Very nice. As far as the unprotected buttons taking a beating in your bag, you wouldn't have to keep it in your bag anymore, as it would fit comfortably in your front pocket (unless you wear girl's pants, which seem to be popular now days for some reason).
Another drawback, however, is that the stylus was reverted back to the short one from the DS original.
Great rendering though, very impressive and authentic looking.

@Liquid Swords: OBJECTION!! As a girl, I ain't wearing dude pants. ;-)
Anyway, certainly an interesting concept... but here's a mental puzzle for you: how would you get it open if the two sliding sides meet flush up against each other and there's no non-moving segment for leverage? Slider phones work well because you set off the spring-loaded mechanism by pushing off the non-moving part of the cell phone. You'd definitely need a release mechanism somewhere on the outside of this, which means it'll be exposed to all the button-mashing elements in one's pockets/bags (I'm assuming this would have to be spring loaded, because it just isn't cool if both sides don't open in synchrony).
I, for one, think the DS Lite is quite perfect the way it is, and can only be improved by non-breaking hinges and better hardware.

@Lucy:
you pull them apart, duh.
and if there was a lock button, you would push the button while pulling apart. i can unlock and open the wings on my DS case without using the center piece for leverage.
personally i think the DS should get BIGGER. i don't like squinting at small screens, and it's uncomfortable for me to hold without its case cuz it's so thin.

As soon as I posted it, I realized my mistake. My apologies. :-)
I agree that the current DS is pretty much perfect, although I wouldn't object to bigger screens, as gevenstaines pointed out. I don't know how that would affect older DS games, though.

Nifty as it looks, you had me hoping it changed into a robot or the Matrix before seeing the video.

Can't work. There needs to be HARDWARE behind those buttons and control pad! Even if they used some sort of wiring harness to send data back to the system and used ultra slim line buttons and a control pad like on a cell, the harness would likely break with all the moving back and forth. That design may look cool, but it's really not executable.
