Backwards compatibility has always been a mainstay for Nintendo's portable systems, with every single new iteration reaching back toward the past to play legacy content. Even the Nintendo DS, third cousin twice-removed of the original Game Boy line, has a convenient second slot to play GBA titles, but it's not perfect. The slot is unable to play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, and for us old-schoolers, that's a bit of a buzzkill.Does this even matter to you? Remember, the original Pokemon Red/Blue titles were original GB titles, as were classics such as Metroid II, Super Mario Land, and even the very first Tetris. We also miss out on the brilliant duo of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Zelda: Oracle of Seasons for the Game Boy Color, that system's final swan song. Do you still keep around a GBA (or older) system for playing these titles, or did you trade it in for store credit for your shiny new DS? Which game from the GB/GBC era was your favorite? And remember, if you answer ... we know you're old.

I keep a Game Boy Color in my bookbag for two games:
Donkey Kong
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel
However, if you've got some way of running GBA homebrew, there's something called Goomba Color that does a decent job of running GB(c) games (you do own the originals of course, right?)

As a bit of trivia, Ghost Babel was the first Metal Gear to have any form of multiplayer

Link's Awakening!
Tetris (the original, not that DX crap)
And if anyone can remember Warlocked, that was a great RTS (!) for the GBC.

I have my GBA SP AND my Super GameBoy for my classic GameBoy needs. Also the GameBoy Player for GameCube plays original GB games, doesn't it? I have one but I never use it.
Anyway, my favorite GB games are:
Link's Awakening
Pokemon Red
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Final Fantasy Adventure

I wouldn't be upset about it if it didn't have a slot that fits the games. The DS is more than powerful enough to play them. It seems like not allowing the DS to play them was a business/marketing decision and not a technical consideration.

The only reason I still have my old (pink) Game Boy Color around is to play Metal Gear Solid. It's hard to find a good source of light to actually see the screen, though - I wonder if the DS's GBA slot would play Game Boy Color games if one were to modify the slot itself?

I still have my SP and all of my original Gameboy games, including Tetris, Link's Awakening, Kirby's Dreamland, Super Mario Land, and Solitaire. The ironic thing is that I actually play these all the time still, I have far more of them than GBA games and they are ten times better in my opinion (except for the remakes like Super Mario 3, that is good). I would absolutely love if my DS played them so I don't also have to lug around two handhelds.

I didn't know that older game boy carts didn't fit in the DS until I bought Dragon Quest 1&2 for the game boy color. The only reason I still have my game cube is so I can play those old games.

i wanna say kid icarus, just because i want to rebuy it and play it on my sp. i wish nintendo would sell the gb/gbc games in the vc, and give you an option to send to the ds, wouldnt need any memory, have it do it in the ds download area, and will not be there when you shut down the ds.

I still have an original flavor GBA and a big "phat" white Gameboy.
I actually used my original gameboy recently to play Castlevania Adventure 1 and 2.
Also I've got a Gameboy Camera to toy around with.
As for favorite classics, Link's Awakening is certainly up there as is Tetris.

I personally love my graphite SP and will be holding on to it for years to come. I just hate playing GBA games on my DS, with that extra empty screen staring at me -- the DS is for DS games only. I am very pleased that I can play ALL Gameboy games on my nice, bright GBA.
However, I'm almost embarrassed to admit the number of gameboy-playing devices in my house -- history and backwards compatibility are definitely important around here. We have...a Classic NES GBA SP (original screen era), a Pikachu-face GBA SP (bright screen era), a Japanese "Happy Mario 20" GBA Micro, a Gameboy Player, a Pokemon GBC (for IR capabilities), a Super Gameboy adapter cartridge for the snes, and transfer paks for the N64 (which only kind-of count). And possibly an original-original Gameboy, though I'm not sure if it works anymore.
And yes, #5, the Gameboy Player will play any Gameboy game.

@7 wildweasel:
The reason the DS can't play GBC games is because they got rid of the Z80 CPU from the GBC. However, people have made things like Goomba Color (GBA homebrew, needs something like the ezflashV expansion pack or M3 lite) that emulate the Z80, so you can play your (legally acquired) GBC games on the DS

I'm with ambient. I keep my SP around for Game Boy games when the mood strikes. But the DS is made for DS games. Nintendo could probably remove the GBA game slot from the DS and make it a lot skinnier. The thought alone makes me drool!

link's awakening is still one of my favourite games ever. the oracle games were great, but they got a bit repetitive. i could go for a good game of the original pokémon, too. pearl is fun, but i miss a lot of my classique pokémon. :(

I've owned just about every iteration of the gameboy. I still have the orginal, and the sp as well as my ds lite. I used to have a color and a GBA but my brother broke the color and I traded the gba for an sp.

I had a clear game boy pocket, which was stolen =(, still have a Super Game Boy, and I bought a GBA when they first came out. Games that are worth keeping the GBA around for: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Seasons, Warioland 2, Donkey Kong Land 1 and 2, and I also have this weird game called Austin Powers Oh Behave! for GBC made by Rockstar. I also keep the GBA around to use the e-reader (yes I bought one).
On a side note, anyone else ever played a virtual boy? I thought it was pretty awesome at the time, but then again I was like 10 when it came out.

Well, I don't really play enough retro games these days. I can't deny that I miss Blue and Red as 150 Pokemon were by far MORE than we ever needed in the first place. The number of pokemon in Diamond/Perl (close to 500 I think) is getting flat our ridiculous.
There are a couple of games I'd like to get back to play at some later date like Super RC Pro Am and possibly another who's name slips my mind at the moment.
