So maybe you're not really into the idea of a cookbook, and you haven't got much of an urge to learn yoga or French. But we're willing to bet there's something you'd like to use your DS for beyond gaming. What kind of apps or non-games might appeal to you? With the new internet browser, one potential function of the DS is fulfilled, but what might appeal to you? Something that's already available (just not in the US), or at least something that's already in development? Or would you want to design some other non-game or edutainment title?

Personally, I'm skeptical of a Nintendo DS cookbook unless it was attached to a well-known chef or chefs or something... the only video game developers I've ever met have not been people I'd taking cooking advice from....
The beer/sommellier cart in Japan sounds like fun, but same caveat as above applies.
I know there's a homebrew app or 2 for it, but I'd love a hiragana/katagana/kanji memorization game.

Those cookbooks look awesome. Too bad I don't read any japanese, and there seems to be a snowball's chance in hell of those getting translated.
The language tutors sound excellent, as well. I'm all for my cute little handheld being as versatile as possible

I'd like to see a bird watching utility for the DS. It'd be nice if it could identify birds by their song through the microphone but that's probably beyond the DS's capabilities.

PDA software seems obvious, it's the first thing I asked about when I received my DS, and I was surprised to learn it wasn't available. I'd like to be able to keep track of my knitting needles, yarn, patterns, grocery lists, phone numbers, addresses, notes, etc.
I know there's at least one homebrew PDA application, but I haven't jumped into homebrew yet.

I really want the cooking ones (and I want them to keep their original recipes), plus kanji and Japanese-training ones (bilingual versions of those poetry collections = win!). I was also expecting rudimentary PDA capabilities to come with the DS, so that would be good too.
rk, my friend is using that cooking ungame, and the recipes are excellent. He's been happy with every one he's prepared so far. :)

I don't know if there's a homebrew app for this yet, but I'd love to see a programmable study guide application for the ds. I just started a basic chemistry course, and making flashcards just seems like such a waste of paper and time. Making them on the ds would be a better space saver.
Getting more specialized, I'd love to see some brain training games for science rather than math. Just thinking of using the stylus to draw connections on a phylogenetic tree and locating an element on the periodic table is giving me (a biology major) goosebumps!

Actually, to tell the truth: I'd love to use my DS to learn Yoga or as a cook book. I don't have a PDA or cellphone, just my iPod & DS, and I try to make the absolute most out of both.
But the application I'd really, really love to see on the DS, above all others, is Japanese learning software. I'm trying really hard to learn Japanese, but the software I have is PC only, so I'm rather screwed on that factor. So, yeah, a nice application that teaches basic katakana and hiragana (how to recognize them and their meaning, writing them, and some pronunciation) would really, really rock. *crosses fingers*

I have of Imported ds games.( My girlfriends Mom bought me 22 ds games when she went to Japan) I got a couple of the training "games" the cooking trainer talks you through it some language trainers let you write in phrases and it translates it for you, that would be great to travel with much better than stand around with some crappy phrase book killing someone’s language

I have the 1000 recipe Kenkou Ouen DS "cookbook", and seriously use the thing almost every day. The recipes are high quality, and you can choose them based on various requirements.
Of course, all in Japanese.
But really, it`s great.
