Let's kick off this fine Tuesday with a hypothetical scenario or two. If someone asked you for DS game recommendations, which two would you pick? Wait, let's make it more difficult. Which two would you recommend for:
- a gamer under the age of twelve?
- someone new to the DS who was a longtime gamer?
- someone new to the DS who was not a longtime gamer?
Of course, answers would likely depend on the person, but let's be general. We spent a lot of time recommending games to people in the last year, particularly around the holidays (when it seemed that everyone who didn't already own a DS bought one) and often ended up pushing a lot of the same titles.
Dragon Quest games came up a lot,
Clubhouse Games was bandied about, and we tried to push
Contra 4 onto as many people as possible. How about you?

Yes.. These recommendations are based on my own experience of DS games...
12 year old: This one is easy, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. Everyone loves Pokemon at this age (or the concept of capturing and forces small, furry creatures into even smaller capsules). Plus, it has straight forward standard gameplay.
Longtime Gamer: Dementium: The Ward. You'd never suspect such a tinydevice to scare the Bejesus out of you. (Admit it.) Plus it has some unique gameplay and awesome sound effects (aside from some HORRID SCREECHING.. I'm lookin' at you, bonesaw.. (And you, banshees))
Non-Longtime Gamer: Drawn to Life. It's simplistic, creative, andlets everyone see some of the best points of the DS. Plus it's cuteenough and surprising sad enough to allow your mind to wrap up in thestory.

Under 12: Animal Crossing DS & Pokemon - my nine year old cousins love both.
For anyone else, I'd recommend Phoenix Wright just so I can then make them listen to the orchestrated soundtrack, and either Feel the Magic or Where do Babies come from? I know my friends and I died over that game as longtime gamers new to the DS years ago, and our friends new to both also loved it.

For the kids: (Dragon Quest Heroes) Rocket Slime. I have not played a lot of good games for kids. I've lent my DS to a young girl and she enjoyed puzzles like Tetris DS, Meteos and Planet Puzzle League quite a lot. It may be just her, though.
For the new gamers: Picross DS and Tetris DS. The latter is accessible enough to everyone, in my opinion. It also seems to me many non-gamers are getting into the hobby from some non-game, such as Brain Age.
For experienced gamers: Geometry Wars Galaxies DS and Advance Wars Dual Strike. The DS is too compelling and interesting a platform for strategy game to pass up on the latter.
