These 3D jigsaw puzzles of Pikachu and Piplup will set you back a modest ¥2,100 (just shy of $20), and are constructed from sixty pieces each. There's a place that sells replica swords (like Gunblades from FF8 and Link's sword from Zelda) in San Fran's china town that has these Pokemon puzzle balls.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the store name at the moment...

My sister received the Stitch puzzle ball from a friend who went to Japan recently and its pretty awesome. They are a bit of a pain to assemble because the pieces are essentially the same size and shape for each of the different rings of the puzzle. However the pieces are numbered and the instructions include the solution to completing the full ball.
