Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is proving quite the distraction. Intelligent Systems' strategy game has occupied our DSes for the last few days, with hours of play already racked up. When we close our eyes to sleep, we only see tiny tank and artillery sprites, moving in right angles across the back of our eyelids. As the game also proved to be a popular choice at our most recent Game Night, we're guessing we're not alone in carrying out late-night, under-the-duvet sorties, so what are your impressions so far? Is Days of Ruin better or worse than Dual Strike, or even superior to the excellent GBA games? Are you focusing more on single-player, or fighting campaigns online? And do you miss Grit as much as we do?

Pity the Game Night was before the game was out in Europe. :( But me and a fair few of my mates here in the UK have been loving this since its Friday release.

I quite miss the old graphics and colours. The single player seems very nice. Only played a bit of multiplayer.
Since everyone's been talking about the lack of all the extras, I've kinda noticed it - but I don't think I've played enough yet. I'll wait and see how my opinion changes as I get a bit further.

Its the best AW EVER!!! This game has sucked me in like no other AW before it! I think you new art style is frickin AMAZING, and it actually has a deep and interesting plotline, which is a first for an AW game! Honestly, I love the older titles, but it used to be just "Oh no! Those naughty Black Hole people are trying to destroy the world!!! Let's set aside our differences and personalities to fight them!!" Whereas now it's a vicious struggle between the remains of variosu armies after almost the entire freakin world is wiped clean by meteors, and characters actually have individual thoughts and feelings. Online is pretty fun, but is only a little distraction for me. I usually just build up a huge army of mechs that overpowers pretty much anyone, and they disconnect. Seriously, if ur gonna lose, have the balls to hit surrender. Wow that was long!

I like DoR much more than Dual Strike, which kept my interest for less than 20 battles. I like the new units -- the motorcycles are the new zerglings -- and the balancing tweaks. I also like the fact that CO's and their powers are now bound to a unit, and that they don't switch the outcome of the battle as much as they did in Dual Strike.
I don't miss the War Room so much, as the optional training battles that come up during the solo campaign progression greatly make up for it. And I don't miss the action battle minigame thingy that came with Dual Strike one bit.
The new art style is much more reflective of a war-torn world than the toy-soldier look we had before, and I like it like that. I also remarked that the classic maps that can be played in Free or Versus mode are as colorful as they were on the GBA (plains, for instance, are light green instead of beige-grey), so nostalgics of the old look-and-feel can make themselves at home.
Couple all of this to the sleep-on-close feature of the DS, and I think that yes, we have an even better game than the GBA predecessors.

Well personally i have always liked the AW games, this one is awesome with the wifi. Friend codes give me the shits tho, and the fact that you can only use the voice chat with a friend is really annoying. Yeah maybe if they added an option to add the person you just played as a friend then yeah... the new art direction is good and im loving the new army logo's.
The mp needs to be worked on tho. Seriously.

I think they should have added a new unit called "engineer" that is a unit that can individually heal your units a little faster than a rig. but other than that i'm very pleased with the new units.

Definitely better than dual strike. I like that they finally got rid of the whole C.O. power system, and I'm definitely happy the "dual strike" dynamic is gone - battles should be fought based on strategy and wit, not on how overpowered your units become ever few turns to an "exciting game mechanic."
I'm enjoying the game sufficiently, but its definitely a bit more difficult than Dual Strike was. Currently on mission 10, "Almost Home," and it is kicking my ass. The enemy just has too many units! And right when you think you're winning, they take out 10 units in one turn.
Bastards.

I think it's awesome. Better than Dual Strike? Hell yeah. Better than the first 2? We'll see, as I'm only halfway through the campaign and I've yet to do any wi-fi games.
I'm not the least bit sad about the lack of war room. As tamriel said, the training maps that pop up make up for it. Plus you still at least have some old war room maps in the free play mode.
I also like how they are handling COs in this version. In AWDS, a dual strike could absolutely rape anyone, even if they had a massive army. Especially if you do that cheap one day capture BS that Sami had.

The problem with doing that though is that a lot of times, the games balance relies on those powers. If you turn the CO powers off and have Hawke face a lesser CO, the balance just isn't there. That's why Days of Ruin is great, full balance, without the way over the top CO powers.
Anyhow, I'm lovin' it thus far. Haven't even played an online match yet, simply enjoying the great single player! I really loved Dual Strike, but I think this is the better game. I'm not sure if the longevity will be as good as Dual Strike though, as I was playing Dual Strike somewhat regularly even up to this one's release, for over two years.

I've been enjoying it quite a bit, but I'm waiting until I finish Campaign Mode and unlock all the COs before I venture into the multiplayer.

I'm having a hell of a time playing DoR. I like the whole series, but to me, DoR stands out:
-Darker colours overall
-Very nice music, and a great music player
-Great character designs
-Good story that doesn't require me to mash the A button in order to get to the chase
I always thought that Dual Strike was good, but it always bothered me how everyone could be so happy at shooting each other in a war- kind of like how Pokemon battles are so violent.
So atleast now DoR is a bit more realistic.
...And hard! I'm stuck on the 13'th mission. I'm such a sissy.

The only thing I really miss are some of the maps that were in AW2 and AW:DS like Land's End... Guess I'll have to make those myself now. Anyway, it's hard to diss DoS considering it has online play!!!

Hmm it has a few things I like, I love, and I kinda hate. The main thing I hated about the game and probably the only thing was the lack of CO's it carries, it has like less then 15 I think while dual strike had a huge number. I LOVE the look of the game, giving it a dark look, with a nice story to add on so that it doesn't feel like the only thing the game is about is randomly killing people. Sure DS had a story, but DOR really made you get into the story. The war room, I'll admit, is something I'll miss and the training maps kind of make up for it, but still feels like they should have left. The CO powers from DOR aren't too bad. In terms of balance, they did their job right, but apparently theres a way to pwn mainly with tabitha's power, but just a rumor. I still wish I can use the old CO's and their powers, just for like old games, and just for fun hehe, Sami + Sensei = pwnage infantry spawning like babies who can capture in 1 turn, pwnage. XD. Anyway, upto mission like 22 I think, after great owl, and it's hard >

My brother and I were discussing the awesomeness of this game just last night in fact and came to the conclusion that there really is no comparison. While Advance Wars DS was hella fun, it was...essentially broken. But it was still awesome, and I will admit that I DO miss the old characters...which is why I was skeptical about DoR. But really, it's not bad at all...and the new units are easy to get a hold of, and the music is great! So, when it comes to Advance Wars, I'll either be in a "pre-apocalyptic mood" or "post-apocalyptic" mood because the games feel that much different, especially with the whole CO Power business. I love this whole series!

It's a great game but the lengthy multiplay is a big turn off with no ability to pause/save and resume later. My friend and I played a game for 2 hours and barely got into combat, and then we had to quit.

I am enjoying this game immensely right now, just clocked 10 hrs and beat the mission where you gain Gage as a new CO...the Trial Missions are pretty cool and tough for the most part, and I really like the emphasis on strategy.
It's too early to tell as I'm only halfway through the Campaign, but here's my *projected* new fav AW chart.

First time I post here to say... definitely the best AW I think... I'm a fan of AW series, I never played so much to all options that are missing in this title and... a "real" scenario is a good motivation, the new balance of troops and little "fixs" (lighting canon to see in fog war, bikes to conquer little faster... and a lot of more) made this game really the most enjoyable AW!! It's a big success!

Great posts, y'all, keep them coming.
Just another "mee too" here.
Multiplayer rocks. It's the golden egg. Only thing that is missing is can't talk shit, oh well.
Most maps are open and playable from the get go. I don't know what people are talking about missing the War Room. The game is more of a strategy platform now, and it's all the better for it.
It's balanced!
