Remember the
crazy ad in Nintendo Power (pictured above) that "hinted" at a DS redesign? (You should; we only posted about it two days ago, silly rabbits.) It turns out that the poor Photoshop job is nothing to speculate about, as NIS America only "placed screenshots on a DS backing to emphasize the platform, and edited them for effect." Now, we never took Marketing 101, but that seems like somewhat misleading advertising to us.
NIS America's marketing guru Nao Zook apologized for any confusion that the picture may have caused, stating that there is no widescreen DS in the works (to her or the company's knowledge). So, you can rest assured (or at least hold your breath until E3) that you won't have to pony up the cash for yet another DS.

They really shoud do a redesign this year with a major improvment. I mean the DS is cool and all but its starting to show its limitation. Remember the Joystiq redesign contest back in 2005, here was my entry:

Ohh...widescreen...I see it now. I read the first paragraph and didn't see anything in the photo to suggest a redesign. I guess when I think "redesign" I think new form factor, not just a wider screen - although a wider screen would be cool. But I wouldn't look at this ad and go, "ooo, widescreen is coming," after all, it's a game ad, not a hardware ad...but maybe just me...

I hope they announce a DS2 or whatever at E3 next week , and that they'll start selling it sometime nearing the end of 2009 . I hate the graphics , I look at the PSP , think of Crisis Core , and think of how great those graphics are .I honestly would rather have great graphic than touchscreen controls , it just makes it hard on developers to make games , and very few of them use the touchscreen properly . What I would love to see is Sony-Nintendo get together and make a handheld system , with Sony's strive for perfection and great hardware tech and power , and Nintendo's knack for inavation , it would be the BEST SYSTEM EVER . Imagine a DS with 2 PSP sive LCD screens , dual analog nubs/sticks , touch screen , PSP's many features ,both of the companies kick-*ss exclusives and a QUAD CORE CELL PROCCESOR . It would PWN the Iphone and XboxPortable .
I can dream right ?

It's actually ended up as a quick clever advertising stunt. It may or may not have been intended, but they've had their ad replicated on many DS-centric websites. Which equals a lot of free advertising for their games, essentially.

I have family who works for one of Nintendos partners (3rd party) and while that is a mock up I will say you should expect something new on the handheld front at this E3 unless Nintendo cares to delay it for a personal outing of their own.
