Secret New Super Mario Bros. Challenge mode: Elation to displeasure in fifteen seconds flat [Update 1]

Bah!First off, the good news. Your copy of New Super Mario Bros. has a heretofore completely undiscovered secret mode of play, dubbed "Challenge Mode" by the creators. Certainly, this mere sentence has already launched your hopes and potential delight into the ionosphere.

So, here's what's going to happen. You're going to take out your copy of NSMB right now, and turn it on. You're going to start up your game and go into the World Map pause screen. You'll then enter this button combination: L R L R X X Y Y. The screen will flash "Welcome to the secret Challenge mode". You'll enter a level of your choosing, and find out that what Nintendo considers a "challenge" is actually an almost inconsequential and possibly quite irritating facet of gameplay: in Challenge mode, the game will no longer allow you to backtrack in levels. You're going to then cry many tears of pain, for your hopes have been dashed 'gainst the sharp rocks of reality.

Okay, so it's a nice throwback to the old days of the original Super Mario Bros., and that's not actually a bad thing. Still, gamers these days prefer the option of backtracking for hidden coins and whatnot, and labelling such a minor addition as a secret Challenge mode is a bit of a faux pas, no?

[Update 1: Commenters are reporting that the code appears to function only once the game has been beaten. Why haven't you beaten it yet? Go go go!]

Xploder cheat saves for your DS

For those of you out there who enjoy taking the easy road, Xploder has just announced the release of their newest product the Nintendo DS Xploder Gamesaves. The product doesn't just limit you to cheating, however, as it offers a fully-functional game save management system that is controlled through their PC application and an included USB cable that hooks into your DS. So now you can archive game saves safely to your PC and delete saves you no longer need. There is also a built in RSS Feed to update you on the latest uploaded game saves online.

[Thanks Chris!]

Mario Kart DS beta courses

In addition to the online track hacks and other unlockables for Mario Kart DS that we've previously reported on, you can know uncover beta courses that were never released by Nintendo. A forum member writes: "There are several courses in Mario Kart DS that are unfinished and completely unavailable (beta). They can be played with a little bit of hacking, but not at all perfectly. The textures are missing, so the courses are displayed almost pure white."

Could lack of time be the reason for not including these tracks? Only Nintendo has the real answer, but it would have been nice to get some extra tracks on the game. Maybe some future solution will allow DS owners to do so though.

Animal Crossing in-game items hit eBay

Like World of Warcraft and Everquest before it, you can now purchase in-game digital property from Animal Crossing: Wild World on eBay. A reader writes,  "Items such as Mario & Luigi hats, 1 Million Bells, and rare items such as the Triforce and Master Sword" are currently available.

People, especially tech enthralled gamers, love stuff. I guess digital goods are no different.
