Meta Review - Resident Evil: Deadly Silence

How does Resident Evil's new portable rendition live up to the classic series? With a current average ranking of 76% and many more reviews outstanding, it could be a welcome addition for many gamers. Here's what the critics are saying:
  • Gamespot 79% - "You know a game's a classic when you can play it years later and still have a great time. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is surprisingly successful at translating the scary bits of the original to a much smaller format, and the end result has a lot to offer Resident Evil fans as well as those who've always wondered what the fuss is about."
  • IGN 70% - "... It's hard to ignore all the little quirks in gameplay and presentation that were a bit easier to disregard in the earlier days of 3D adventuring, so if we look at it as a new title instead of a revival, well, it's not a whole lot better than a good but flawed game design."
  • 1UP 80% - "In an effort to milk the Resident Evil cow once again, Capcom has converted the classic but flawed original title to -- of all places -- the Nintendo DS, and while the game succeeds on many levels, it also suffers in some obvious respects... While polygon counts have shrunk to accommodate the handheld's particular specs, you never feel shortchanged."

Preview Alert: Resident Evil DS

For all the innovation that's present on the platform, it's somewhat unusual to find DS owners getting so fervent about the remake of a 10 year old game that's already been remade once before. Then again, the game in question just so happens to be Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, a title crammed to the brim with, silly plot developments, Jill sandwiches, puzzle-solving amulets and, most importantly, grotesque zombies. What's not to like, right?

1up has posted a nice little preview of Capcom's portable evil, confirming some of the things we were wondering about and detailing some of the differences between the DS version and the original. With a touch-controlled menu, first-person slashing sequences, cooperative wireless play and the ability to literally blow poison back into an attacker's face, it seems like the game makes pretty good use of the DS' abilities. After all, it could have been very easy for Capcom to just slap a map on the top screen, call it a day and watch the franchise rake in the cash.

Now if only we could get a version of Resident Evil 4...

Resident Evil: Deadly Silence import review

Can't wait for the US release of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence? Well then GameBrink has your fix with an import review of the game's Japanese counterpart. From the critique: "The ten year old puzzles are still there, graphics are the same mostly, and you still have to use ribbons to save. On the other hand, door and cutscenes can be skipped, loading in between areas is almost instantaneous, and DS frills are fun. Classic game on the go with slight upgrades is a great thing in my opinion and because of this it’s truly one of the best on the DS."

DS comedies in full effect

A couple of humorous DS videos are hitting cyberspace faster than a whip crack! Well, one video is kind of old, but it still is whipping strong. Follow the links for videos in question and have a great weekend.

New Resident Evil screenies

Resident Evil: Deadly SilenceAfter watching the video trailer of Capcom's re-REmake of Resident Evil earlier this month, it  became apparent that Capcom was making every effort to appease survival-horror fans...well, at least the ones that enjoyed the series before Resident Evil 4 fixed revitalized it. Yes, the static camera angles, obtuse "place the magical obsidian gem into the fish statue" puzzles and robotic aiming have all returned, but the allure of slashing zombies in first-person view and an apparent multiplayer mode will undoubtedly prove much too hard to resist.

Still, it would have been far better to see the game drop the fixed camera angles and adopt an over-the-shoulder view with precise, stylus-driven aiming. The environments are all real-time now, so why not? Why can't you use the guns in first-person mode? And how about a Nintendogs-esque mini-game where you attempt to train a chained zombie, only to have him nibble your arm off at unexpected intervals? Ponder these questions while you absorb the new and very bloody screenshots of the game.

[Correction: Upon closer scrutiny (thanks el pero de nate), it seems we gave this remake a bit too much credit. The environments aren't real-time, but we still stand by our ideas for making the game better.]

Capcom preps Resident Evil DS

resident evil dsCapcom released some new details yesterday about the upcoming Resident Evil: Deadly Silence for the Nintendo DS. Punch Jump writes: "The new version will include new puzzles that will require players to give CPR to an infected team member through the handheld's microphone, push buttons with a knife that lay in between the person's hand, and slash zombies using the stylus."

With so many remixes of the first Resident Evil, we're hoping this one will deliver.

Resident Evil DS trailer released

Resident Evil: Deadly Silence artIt's time for the evil to leave the residence and take a trip to a sunny park, as Capcom has updated their website with a new video of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (see what they did there?), the DS remake of the survival-horror game that everybody thinks started it all. The video reveals quite a few surprises coming in the form of some new touch screen mini-games, first-person slashing and bringing fallen comrades back from the brink (further cementing the DS as a CPR simulator). The graphics are also surprisingly good, though that may just be as a result of all that blood spraying in every conceivable direction. To see it for yourself, follow the link, click on "Enter", then "Movie" and then on the flashing Japanese text to the left.

It also looks like you can choose to play through the game with multiple characters - a lot more than the original game allowed. Personally, we prefer to stick with the master of unlocking herself, Jill Valentine. And yes, the original voice acting makes a welcome return too.
