The DS Life: The Game Boy lives on

The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handheld and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at gmail dot com.

Though the Game Boy brand's days are numbered, making way for Nintendo's dual-screened future and profit plans, at least one young gamer is doing his part to keep the old, gray brick's memory alive. Step past the post break for the full story and this week's edition of The DS Life.

DS may have killed the 'Game Boy' name

We all suspected that the Game Boy Advance was basically moribund, because it lacks the high-tech money-printing capabilities of the DS. Confirming our suspicions, Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned in an interview with Kotaku that Nintendo basically didn't care about the platform anymore.

Now, according to George Harrison, it's not just Nintendo's "third pillar" strategy that's out, but the whole Game Boy line. He told GameDaily that "This year in our marketing you really won't see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark."

It makes sense for Nintendo not to bring back the Game Boy name when the DS has so much momentum. But, personally, we think it's quite sad to see a Nintendo standard go away. Oh, well, at least we've got the Wii now to take over as the most awkwardly-named Nintendo console on the market.

Non-Game Boy: Serious games before they were cool

Since the release of Brain Age in Japan, Nintendo has turned their attention toward casual, nontraditional fare for adult audiences. Much of it, like Brain Age, is casual game material with a slight educational slant, but other successful DS releases, like Cooking Navi and Eigo Zuke, are not games at all, but rather educational aids and tools designed to use the DS's unique interface. They're all doing massive business, which makes it difficult to laugh at them no matter how silly they are.

But Nintendo was not the first company to attempt to sell application software on a gaming system, however. That distinction probably falls on BASIC Programming for the Atari 2600. Nintendo wasn't even the first company to sell application software on a Nintendo handheld. In fact, Game Boy non-games appeared in 1991. They didn't change the face of gaming. But they make for an interesting historical footnote now, and isn't that better than selling millions of copies? It is for us!

DS Daily: The lost Color

Old school PokemansBackwards compatibility has always been a mainstay for Nintendo's portable systems, with every single new iteration reaching back toward the past to play legacy content. Even the Nintendo DS, third cousin twice-removed of the original Game Boy line, has a convenient second slot to play GBA titles, but it's not perfect. The slot is unable to play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, and for us old-schoolers, that's a bit of a buzzkill.

Does this even matter to you? Remember, the original Pokemon Red/Blue titles were original GB titles, as were classics such as Metroid II, Super Mario Land, and even the very first Tetris. We also miss out on the brilliant duo of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Zelda: Oracle of Seasons for the Game Boy Color, that system's final swan song. Do you still keep around a GBA (or older) system for playing these titles, or did you trade it in for store credit for your shiny new DS? Which game from the GB/GBC era was your favorite? And remember, if you answer ... we know you're old.

MASSIVE clearance at Best Buy starts today

If you're near a Best Buy store, gather up your $2 bills and get going, because they're in the midst of an epic videogame clearance, and you'll want to get there before the unscrupulous speculator types grab all the stuff to sacrifice to the ravenous eBay. You've got to be wily to get to the goods before the FatWalleters and the CAGs!

We've got a list of all the DS and GBA software on sale after the jump. Don't expect to find all of it-- most of it has been out of stock for months or years at most stores, and the price changed to clear out remaining copies. But we hope you do find what you're looking for in abundance. We wish we could go tomorrow and check it out ourselves. By the time we get there, there won't be anything but cobwebs and tumbleweeds, and those will probably be regular price.

[Thanks, ali emamdjomeh!]

DS releases for the week of January 8th

Excellent -- the rest of us actually have a few games hitting shelves this week, and Japan doesn't have quite the flood they've enjoyed lately, so things are reaching equilibrium. Now let's hope for an upcoming deluge of goodness for everyone. Starting next week, there are some interesting titles heading out into the world ... so let's see what we have to tide us over.

First up, the US:

DS releases
  • Arthur and the Invisibles

GBA releases
  • Arthur and the Invisibles

Boy arrested for opening Game Boy early

Filed under both tough love and weird news -- a 12 year old boy who couldn't bear to wait for Christmas to open his shiny new Game Boy got to endure a visit to the pokey after mom called the cops. Ouch! The boy was charged with petty larceny, and his mother said she hopes this will calm him down a little, both in school and at home.

While we understand the unbearable excitement of knowing there's Ninty gear under the tree, we encourage children everywhere not to lift the flaps on those gifts until instructed to do so ... after all, that ink from fingerprinting is hell to wash off.

DS releases for the week of December 4th

Oh no! Kirby: Squeak Squad and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. What's a DS owner to do? The obvious answer, of course, is to forgo buying any holiday gifts this year so that you can instead be assured of enough cash to buy both these games for the really important person here -- yourself. Your friends and family will totally understand. And hey, if they kick you out, at least you can take the DS with you!

Back in the real world (oh, fantasy world, we love you so), Gamasutra reports that Kirby: Squeak Squad is the most preordered game across all platforms right now. Everybody loves Kirby!

DS releases:
  • Cartoon Network Racing
  • Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
  • Kirby: Squeak Squad
  • Lionel Trains: On Track

Wario Ware Twisted finally goes to Europe

Yes, that's right ... the GBA's Wario Ware Twisted, relesed in 2004 in Japan and 2005 in the US, is finally making its way (officially) to Europe. Is there anyone who wants this two year old game yet that hasn't already imported it? And likely for less than the price it's sure to have when it streets.

The real story on the game's rather delayed EU release is somewhat mysterious. Everyone seems to have a different reason for the delay -- manufacturing issues, lack of interest in the European market, legal restrictions. Can you add to the pile of conspiracy theories? Tell us what you've heard.

Wario Ware Twisted is set to finally hit Europe in December.

Japanese hardware sales, 12 June - 18 June: Phat's back

Quite possibly the only sane thing we've received from Japan this week, the Japanese hardware sales charts show it like it is -- no silly comparisons, half-truths or fuzzy mathematics in sight. The ranking, according to number of units sold:

- DS Lite: 141,487 9,460 (7.17%)
- PSP: 24,653 2,997 (13.84%)
- DS Phat: 22,748 21,377 (1559.23%)
- PS2: 20,737 1,756 (9.25%)
- GBA SP: 4,642 526 (12.78%)
- Xbox 360: 1,407 307 (27.91%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,294 360 (21.77%)
- Gamecube: 1,002 41 (4.27%)
- GBA: 20 10 (33.33%)
- Xbox: 15 5 (25.00%)

Aside from the soothing abundance of green, the most noticeable aspect of this week's chart is undoubtedly the DS Phat's performance, indicating either a surge in its popularity or a surge in desperation amongst those who couldn't track down a DS Lite. Perhaps it's time to import a black one from Europe?
