Man proposes using homebrew Bejeweled

Hey, casual games don't have to be cynical exercises in making loadsamoney. In fact, our inner romantic dork almost swooned after recently reading the tale of Bernie and Tammy, who tied the knot thanks to the mother of all casual titles: Bejeweled.

Okay, so strictly speaking, it wasn't the Bejeweled, but a DS homebrew version of Popcap's wildly popular creation, as developed from scratch by Bernie. The game is a favorite of his partner Tammy, so the young Casanova wrote her a special version, and gave it her to play.

The reason why Bernie's Bejeweled was special? Well, when Tammy reached a certain score, the screen cleared and a ring scrolled down in its place. Apparently, it was at this point that Bernie got down on one knee and popped the question. A no doubt thrilled Tammy said "yes." Awwww.

Congrats, you two! We're off to buy new hats!

DS Daily: St. Valentine's Edition

You'll have to excuse us if we seem a little spacey or preoccupied, but today is the day of lurve. Of course, that doesn't mean you have to cast your DS aside.

In fact, we're curious: does the DS figure at all in your Valentine's Day schedule? Hey, we already know the little guy can inspire closeness! Perhaps you intend to face off against your partner in a romantic round of Tetris or Advance Wars, or team up to tackle Professor Layton's more devilish puzzles together, pausing only to gaze into one another's eyes.

Maybe you've decided against giving traditional presents that eventually die or are consumed, and intend to give the object of your affections a DS-related gift (or card)? Maybe you're giving them an actual DS. Is anybody giving their loved one a whole DS? That's crazy. Even if it would totally win our heart.

The DS Life: Handheld happenstance

The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handhelds and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

"Did you know that if two people who love each other go to Todai, they'll live happily ever after?"

"Hm?"

"If it really works, let's go to Todai together, okay?"

"It's a promise!"

Love Cat Life shows love for dogs, too

Specifically, Nintendogs. And more specifically, the cash generated by Nintendogs. Forgive us for being cynical, but Love Cat Life does look exceedingly familiar. But for our (hypothetical) pet simulator money, Love Cat Life wins over Nintendo's masterpiece, for mostly hilarious reasons:
  • Simulated litterboxes
  • Riding a little cat-sized truck over a ramp
  • Meowing music game!
We started off being sarcastic, but we just convinced ourselves. It was the music game that did it.

The DS gets its first promotional sewing machine

Oshare Majo Love and Berry, the arcade-game-interfacing, rhythm-actioning, dressing-up smash from Sega, is popular enough to support even the most tenuous promotional items, as evidenced by the Janome sewing machine seen above. When Japanese gamers buy Love and Berry DS Collection stuff, they'll receive postcards they can send in for a chance to win this Love and Berry DS Collection sewing machine, as well as a Love and Berry DS Collection jewelry box. Oddly enough, this is not the first time the worlds of Nintendo handhelds and sewing machines have collided.

No matter what you think of it now, we guarantee you'll be pining for one of these machines when it goes up on eBay in five years. Or are we the only ones like that?

Love Love Hamster loves to give us new screens

A whole slew of new screens from the upcoming Nintendogs clone Love Love Hamster have hit the net over at Famitsu. The screens depict some of the stat screens Japanese gamers (or foreign importers) can expect to see whilst playing the game, as well as some screens of the in-cage environment.

Also present are some heart-warming screens of hamsters at play, as they wrestle and just overall crush your heart under the power of their cuteness. Check after the break for included screens.

Sega's feminine e-reader

Sega has decided that they want to go ahead and make an e-Reader for the DS. This e-Reader, which takes cards and electronically scans them via a hardware attachment to affect gameplay, works with their game Oshare Majo Love and Berry (Love and Berry Dress up and Dance in the US). The awkward thing is, you get the cards to go with the game from the arcade, which are used in the DS game to dress up your character with new outfits and hairstyles.

Nintendogs paves way for hamsters?

Given the success of Nintendo's dog-training, dog-loving sim Nintendogs, it's no wonder third-party developer Digital Kids is trying to strike while the iron is hot. We've seen clones centering around cats and dogs already, but this is a first. Now you'll be able to virtually pet and talk to a hamster in Love Love Hamster, which is set for release on the 2nd of November in Japan.

There are 6 total breeds in all, including the Golden hamster, Dzungarian hamster, Chinese hamster, Campbells hamster, Roborovskii hamster and Panda hamster. The Panda hamster, by far, is the hamster of choice for the DS Fanboy staff and could help pave the way to cross-breeding other species. We hope to soon create the Bark; half-bear, half-shark, all unstoppable killing machine (not to be confused with the Bear-Shark).

Anyway, a trailer, which sadly lacks sound, for the game may be found here.

We debate the hot topics!
