Hands on: Metroid Prime Hunters

So anxious for the impending release of Metroid Prime Hunters that you're on the verge of a mental breakdown? Of course you are. Intent on devouring every last bit of information about the game that spews forth from the dark recesses of the Internet? Yes, that's you alright. Want to check out the IGN forums and discover a hands-on report, brimming with both major and minor details? Obviously, you do. Getting annoyed by this terrible question-answer approach to what should have been a simple introductory paragraph? Most definitely.

One of the IGN staffers posted some of his early experiences with the game and we have to admit--there's plenty of information to glean here. The game's scan-happy single-player section is supposedly looking superb, a revelation that is sure to put many Prime fans at ease. Well, at least until they get to this part: "And that's exactly what Hunters is: a FPS. None of this First-person 'adventure' crap." Hmm.

Other highlights include:

  • Samus starts the adventure with all her equipment intact.
  • Overall playtime of the single-player portion is just under the Gamecube's Metroid Prime.
  • The game has a "Rival Radar" mode which tracks a rival's stats on the web. It works a bit like Nintendog's "bark" mode.
  • 19 multiplayer arenas are present in the tested version.
  • Each player gets a "Hunter's License". Penalties will be incurred on that following a forced disconnection.
  • In order to initiate voice chat, the X button must be held down.
It's almost here.

[Thanks, dwarpdesign!]

1. plenty of information to gleaN, that is.

After getting flamed to death on the gamespot forums for renouncing the lack of innovation in FPS', I'll reserve my anti-MPH comments. Don't get me wrong, I will definitely give this game a chance (at least it's a NINTENDO fps), but I doubt it'll be worth the hype. I'm more psyched for Super Princess Peach.

2. i fully understand how some people dislike the over saturation of FPS's these days... but when u say you are more hyped about Super Princess Peach... i dunno man, i dunno.

As for me, I am super hyped about this game, its gonna own.

6. I'm more psyched about Tetris DS. Rather than playing Hunters which will no doubt be a bastion for CS kiddies looking for a new home, at least Tetris DS will have a higher head count of intellectuals that are looking for a challenge that doesn't involve how well you can pull a trigger or how accurately you can aim a gun.

7. The information in that thread has been collected and is now stored here:

Enjoy.

9. I think you misunderstand the terminus "intellectual". Tetris and the likes can be sort of a mental challenge for many people, that's for sure, but are nowhere near any real intellectual challenge you encounter studying, writing papers or working on your PhD. No Intellectual in their right minds would play videogames for "an intellectual challenge". For fun at best, but games, puzzle or not, just can't keep up with the real puzzles, read: intellecutal challenges, that our existence provides us out there. They (puzzlegames), are just too simple and without any relevance to actuality whatsoever. I'd not use a strong term like intellect on something as meaningless as videogames.

The article didn't ask any questions for us to discuss, that's why I hope my entry is not off topic ;)

10. Phl0w, by looking at only some elements of puzzle games, you make the incorrect assumption that they can't be intellectually challenging. Consider that, while the bases of many puzzle games are simple, often an imposed time restriction in these same games make them "a real intellectual challenge". The upper stages of these games can be just as mentally taxing as some of the supposedly superior challenges that you mentioned. So please, get off your high horse; Ranma had a fine point.

11. I agree that Tetris is an intellectual challenge, but at high speeds and levels doesn't it become just as much of a twitch game as any FPS?

Tetris is spatial relationships and quick decision-making boiled down to its purest form. Both are necessary skills to succeed at any FPS. One could even say that online FPSs are more intellectually challenging than Tetris due to the added elements of cooperation and teamwork.

I think it's that when playing Tetris, you can easily convince yourself and others that it is intellectually stimulating. Much harder to do that while getting profanities, racial slurs, and suggestions as to your sexual orientation hurled at you in a crowded CS server.

LMAO Like an FPS only attracts gun-toting brutes or that a game where the only rule is to line blocks really stands for intellectual achievement? Get your head out of your ass!

I love Tetris too, but I don't recall a puzzle game that only involves lining up blocks as being the benchmark for being intellectually advanced. Gee, look! I can clear 400 lines per game. I should register for Mensa! LOL
