Lite vs. Phat: Round Four

This week, Eurogamer joins in on the rather one-sided battle that is the original DS versus the swanky DS Lite. Their conclusions are strikingly similar to the ones shared by most sane people, in that Nintendo's revision boasts a more compact design, sleeker looks, a better stylus and much brighter screens.

"We never really complained about the old DS screen, but put next to its younger sibling it draws howls of derision. Really, howls - we're not showing it to girls any more, they hurt our ears."

If you find yourself swelling with hatred and jealousy after reading the rest of the excellent article and realizing that your import Lite has yet to find its way to you (join the ever-growing club), at least find some solace in the fact that, unlike Eurogamer, you didn't opt for the Arctic Blue Lite.

We're joking. Don't kill us, Blue fans. Seriously though, it's the worst one.

(Yes, still joking.)

1. i really couldn't agree more - the lite is a huge improvement over phatty, the sheer awesomeness of the screens aside - the new stylus is the most important improvement.

let me put it this way - metroid prime: hunters is completely unplayable with the original stylus, but with the new one, i've found i actually prefer using the stylus over the wrist strap boot (which is omitted from the lite's strap).

i also had a terrible habit of tilting phatty to a point of losing any visibilty of the action on the LCD. with the lite, i have less need to contort my hands in order to stay comfortable, but even if i do, the viewing angle is much more generous.

...and that blue one isn't so bad, but i did give the ice blue one to my wife, keeping the 'less gay' crystal white one for myself:-)

2. No one says anything about the scratch-resistance of the lite though. I bet it sucks. The original DS is a tank. Mine doesn't have a single scratch on it yet. The DS sure does look purdy though.

3. Well, I finally found a DS Lite here in Japan this weekend. I'm not sure about how scratch resistant it is yet, but it sure seems to be a fingerprint magnet!

4. i've bumped my lites around a bit (all 3 colors), and i can't see any scratches - these bad boys are using much harder plastic than an ipod, maybe even better than the PSP - anyway, i don't forsee any scratching problems.

5. You've got 3 DS Lites? Holy crap share the wealth!!!!

I'm really excited if what you say is true about scratches.. I can't stand the fact that my ipod is so pretty yet the case it came with puts tiny scratches ALL OVER IT.. And what's the point of owning a beautiful portable product that is so freaking delicate that you can't even look at it funny with out breaking it and you have to keep it hiddden in some ugly case so you don't ruin it's pretty looks. POINTLESS. Why own something pretty that you have to hide? It's just for bragging rights? In other words FUCK THE PSP. Pretty ass pile of scratched up non-portable junk.

I'm not too happy about the finger print issue either. Is it any better on the Navy Blue because that's the one I want. I'm sick of white. Too many ipods are white. Navy Blue is where it's at.

And I agree about the stylus. It just isn't right for Metroid. It's better than the thumb strap though. That thing isn't nearly accurate enough. I have to turn the sensativity all the way up just to use it and it still sucks.

What we really need is a hybrid thumb strap / stylus.. It would fit more snug on the thumb and not slip around and instead of the fat surface like the thumbstrap it would have a short stylus on it. that way your hand wouldn't get cramped and it would still be accurate. Now somebody make it happen.

6. I'm finding myself caring less and less about these "Lite vs Phat" posts; in fact I didn't care at all. That's the damn point of the Lite, to be better than the original. You're just beating a dead horse with these posts.

7. Well, it did trample my family to death. I'm very angry about that.
