Taking a break from my usual posting routine, I embarked on a totally manly picnic today and quickly found myself gazing up at the sky and trying to spot familiar shapes in the clouds. A tortoise, a banana, a wolf and Optimus Prime all gently floated by, though none of those were quite as interesting as the Japanese sales chart for the week ranging from 20 March to 26 March which quite unexpectedly made an appearance. I quickly jotted the information down right before the cloud morphed into an uncanny Woody Allen. The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:- DS Lite: 119,986
- Phat DS: 39,307
- PS2: 34,169
- PSP: 31,077
- GBA SP: 5,627
- GB Micro: 4,883
- Gamecube: 1,458
- Xbox 360: 1,415
- Xbox: 117
- GBA: 98

I've noticed Joystiq takes quite a delay in getting the Japanese hardware sales so I'm going to suggest you get them from www.GamesAreFun.com . They have the sales up in a timely fashion and they provide some insight on ocassion as to what is going on over in Japan that is pushing console XYZ.

An American site? Say what? You're telling me that people from other countries don't read this site? You're telling me Nintendo fanboys don't care about how well their console is doing in other countries much less it's home land?
Shit I enjoy seeing sales information for games/consoles in every country.
If all I cared about was America I'd be playing my xbox or watching some stupid ass reality show on network television right now. (I'm being sarcastic, but you get my drift)

Actually, if you add up both DS versions you get:
159,293
If you add up everything else on the list you get:
78,844
If you add up everything else on the list and DOUBLE it:
157,688
So literally, more DS's were sold than everything else combined... twice.

I wonder how many of these are new DS owners... It just amazes me how wonderful the DS, even the old one, even in a time of insane shortage is still selling. It almost makes me fear what would happen in the event of some DS backlash (but don't really see that happening...). I wonder what it's going to be like a month from now.

Its funny how they only show the Japanese hardware sales. If they showed the US, European or UK sales charts, the figures would tell a completely different story.
DS sales 15.43 million
PSP sales 12.08 million
the difference is only in Japan. In the US psp sales are slightly higher overall and Europe is neck and neck.
And jus wait till:
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Metal Gear Solid
Devil May Cry
Silent Hill
Resident Evil Outbreak
Tekken: Dark Resurrection
Gran Turismo 4
GTA 2 psp
Not that I need superior sales to enjoy my handheld to the fullest. I'll jus leave u with this fact...
PSP generated US$1.6 billion in 2005, more than both Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS combined.
Good day losers.

Yeah, you just wait till all those games that don't even have estimated release dates in Japan come out! You know, in a year or two. The best you can do is to list the popular franchises that will probably get PSP games? And both the Resident Evil Outbreak games for the PS2 were horrible, so I see no reason this one will be any different, if they even make it.

Yeah no crap and lets take a look at CURRENT game sales instead of just the handheld sales.
I bet Sony hasn't had a single game sell over a million yet for the PSP and Nintendo has quite a large list of them that is still growing.
Nintendo is selling WAY the hell more games for the DS than Sony is for the PSP, and that is what makes the money.
Just take a look at the link I posted above. Look at previous week game sales too. Nintendo has 5 to 7 DS games in the top 10 every week for a year or more. Sony's had like.. 3 in its entire existance, and that didn't last more than a week for each.
Also how much money is Sony losing on each PSP sold? I mean it's not like they're selling a ton of games for these portable dust collectors. Sounds like all they're doing is burning through their cash.
But yeah.. You're right.. Sony is the clear cut winner. It's not like 3 and a half million is a significant number or anything.. nah.
Oh and lets not forget that Sony likes to release SHIPPED NUMBERS and Nintendo releases SOLD numbers.

HUH??? what are you comparing? the psp revenues to nintendo's profits? The entire sony conglomerate didn't make 1.6 billion in profit last year. Your pretend facts don't match any numbers i've seen anywhere.
Right now sony is praying that the ps3 is as big as the ps2 or they'll have to take drastic action above the 10,000 people they've already laid off. Meanwhile if you check the story above this one nintendo just announced they expect to make $800 million in PROFIT mostly due to the DS.
Anyway the DS has great games NOW which is better than some rehashes of hits from 5 years ago which MIGHT be released at some point in the future.

Asshole. There's no such figure anywhere near that i know of, and i've done my research. Last time i checked Sony's stocks are dropping. Sony is still losing money over the PSP, and with the IMMINENT AND SURE FAILURE of the UMD movie discs, low software sales, and i predict, a DS Renaissance in Europe and America, you might want to say "generated a loss." There is no way the PSP could've generated that figure, hell there's no way Sony could break even in the first year of the product release alon.
