Continuing this week's theme, we've got a big question: what's your favorite game ever? Yes, ever -- not just on the DS, but all time. That's a tough one, and we'll look the other way (just this once) if you guys can't narrow it down to just done. You little scamps tend to cheat and slip in ties for first place anyway. We expect to hear about several Zelda titles, and perhaps a few Metroids, and hope for a Castlevania or two, but it's the offbeat favorites that are always interesting, so be prepared to explain.

Probably two of the best known from the N64 - Goldeneye and Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I just have great memories of spending far too much time sitting with friends playing the Goldeneye multiplayer, creating silly rules and keeping track of who was winning. Perfect Dark was technically superior, but somehow Goldeneye just seems more fun. Add to that a pretty damn good singleplayer and you are sorted.
I also remember when I first got Ocarina of Time, and the sime spent sitting onfront of the tv playing through it, going exploring in the frankly huge (for the time) landscape and finding all the different bits to do, from getting a better sword by visiting different people to trying to find the elusive bottles and fishing away in the hopes of landing the big one. Utterly fantastic game.
Honourable mentions go to Mariokart 64 (which we have been playing again recently thanks to the Wii's virtual console) for yet more multiplayer fun, and Warioland on the gameboy, one of the first games I really sat down with to play from start to finish.
Missing a lot of 'classic' games, but I only really got into gaming with the N64, so thats where mine come from

I'm surprised there aren't more people listing Mario 64 or Zelda: OoT out there.
I definitely have a soft spot for Mario 64. I remember hooking up my my N64, turning it on, and the game just blew my mind. Runner up would be Final Fantasy 3/6. I haven't really picked up any of the other ones in the series since.

Final Fantasy on the NES
I can't even believe I'm saying that, but reading through the other responses I got to thinking about a game that really affected me, and Final Fantasy was a game that my best friend and I bought at the same time and played from beginning to end and we talked about it constantly on the bus... it was great.
and in those terms, link's awakening comes in a close second, I got it the Christmas it came out and I played it with another friend on the bus, and we kept trading strategies for beating leeels and bosses and it was great, and it even had life after we beat it when we found (or read in Nintendo power) the select warp bug... man those were the days

Seiken Densetsu 3. I remember downloading it on a whim one day, with translation, when I was 6 or 7, and playing it for hours straight. The music..characters...mmm.
In no particular order, there's also:
Sonic 2
SMB3
LttP
Chrono Trigger
Paper Mario
Smash Bros.
Special mention goes out to F-Zero GX. I broke controllers over that game, but damned if I didn't love it.

MGS on the PS1 WAS awesome. I was just talking about that the other day with a friend.
So many good choices in here... DSF readers have good taste! Despite all my love for Castlevania, my favorite E V E R was right there in the original post -- original Zelda for the NES, but there's a metric ton of games right on its heels. But the original LoZ continues to impress me, despite the fact that it's old. My best friend and I do a run-through every month or so since we got it on the Virtual Console, just because we can and it's easily accessible. Someday, when I am old and crochety and have grandchildren, I can't wait to try to explain to them why it's the best thing ever.

Skies of Arcadia for me.
As for more common favorites: Shenmue, SM64, Ocarina.
And I can't believe nobody here has said StarCraft. It's a nearly perfect game.
