DS Daily: Five dollars down

In the last ten years or so, led by the pre-Gamestop game specialty chains (Babbages, EB, EBX, Software, Etc., Funcoland, Rhino Video Games), the practice of preordering games has become commonplace. Before the preorder, companies just shipped enough products. Crazy, right?

We're generally not fond of the practice, since we like to pay money for stuff and not a chance at stuff later, but we recognize that it's firmly entrenched in the gaming business model. How about you all? Do you habitually preorder your games? Or only when you perceive a chance of limited availability? Which do you think benefits more from a preorder-- huge releases or niche games with tiny print runs?

1. Anyone who was a fan of comic books in the 90's knows the benefits of pre-ordering. Need that variant cover? Want that copy of the indie comic with the 5,000 copy print run? Pre-ordering lets that happen. In theory (though not always the reality of the Gamestop Way), pre-ordering is painless and results are good. In theory.

Since I haven't experienced the "mean Gamestop clerk won't give me my pre-order" thing people sometimes complain about, I'm pretty much happy with pre-ordering anything that comes out on the DS that I want week of release. Etrian Odyssey, Phoenix Wright 2, Izuna, Castlevania: PoR (and its super-sweet bonus)... I have Luminous Arc and Hoshigami both pre-ordered.

I didn't pre-order Planet Puzzle League, because I figured it would have a massive print-run. Nor did I pre-order New Super Mario Bros. Most PS2 games (outside of Valkyrie Profile 2 and Odin Sphere) I don't pre-order. PS2 just seemed to get a larger piece of the store space than the DS, and thus was more likely to get more copies of something without my help.

2. I tend to pre-order my games at a game crazy, because with every pre-order you get a "rent one, get one free" coupon for the Hollywood Video store that is attached.

3. If I have the available monies, I will usually pre-order from Amazon. I don't do it very often, and I only do it on titles I know will be hard to get otherwise.

4. One of the gifts of living in a small town is that we don't get the shipments that larger towns do. (That, and the nearest "Entertainment" [ex: GameStop, FYE, etc.] is over 3 hours away.)

5. I currently am Preordered for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
I have never preordered a game before now.

6. I'll only preorder if I'm getting something extra out of it. Portrait of Ruin being a prime example of a very good preorder bonus.

7. I haven't preordered but I'm thinking about doing it for Luminous Arc, just so I have it in my hands asap.

The thing that gets me is the preordering spiel I've overheard numerous times at Gamestop. A manager was trying to convince a mom that if she didn't preorder Pokemon DS then her kid would NEVER SEE IT for MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS. She claimed her store had something like 300 pre-orders and there'd be nothing for anyone else (and I guess she wanted the lady to think all the other stores in town wouldn't have enough to go around either). That's just one example, I've heard the same story about other titles too.

I hate being lied to so I'll just pre-order at Gamecrazy, if I ever need to do it.

8. Any preordering from me is done via Amazon, mostly because:
a) They charge nothing until they ship
b) The USPS guy is nowhere near as much of an idiot as the local EBStop guy

9. I'll pre-order something if I'm really excited about it, but I rarely buy brand new games.

10. I miss not living in a state with Hollywood Video AND a Game Crazy.

Anyway, I don't usually preorder unless there is a bonus for doing it or I am beyond excited about a title and simply cannot wait to play it and don't want to risk it being out of stock.

That being said, I still haven't preordered anything in the last 5 years.

11. I think the only game I've ever pre-ordered was Wind Waker, and that was just for the Master Quest disc. I did pre-order my GameCube and original DS, but neglected to do so for the Wii, which almost cost me. Fortunately, I work at a Toys 'R' Us, so I managed to get my hands on one on day one anyway.

Anywho, I almost never pre-order games. I would have for Protrait of Ruin, but my local EB said they didn't even know about the sweet bonus swag when I asked (bet it was a lie), so that didn't happen. If any other games come out with a great pre-order bonus, I'd think about it, but other than that, I'll take my chances on release day.
