Betty Boop license snapped up

Destination Software has grabbed the video game rights to the popular cartoon character Betty Boop. They've announced a game called Betty Boop Double Shift, in which Betty runs a restaurant.

Maybe Destination is at the forefront of a Betty Boop revival? Maybe the character is going to come back in a new cartoon or something? Or maybe the license was really cheap and a gimmick for a take on Diner Dash.

Informal survey: who here has seen a Betty Boop cartoon? Who Framed Roger Rabbit doesn't count. There are a lot of them available for free at the Internet Archive, having fallen into the public domain.

1. I've seen a few. They're really.... weird.

2. The only one I can remember is the one where she says "NO! NO! A THOUSAND TIMES NO!"

Please tell me that isn't from Roger Rabbit.

3. Ooh! Ooh! I have, I have!
I remember... there was some guy delivering blocks of ice for ice-boxes... which was a completely foreign and confusing process for me, and I think is a good example of the relevancy to today.

4. I've seen one. Two if you count Roger...

5. Why doesn't Who Framed Roger Rabbit count? That movie was pretty flippin' sweet! At least, I think it was.

6. It had Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. What more could you ask for? Oh and Bob Hoskins also played Mario in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Those movies are totally watchable.

7. Seen a lot of Betty Boop cartoons as a kid. Mostly Betty flirting with men, livestock, and scaring small animals with her helium voice. Fashion-wise, I have heard the Betty Boop image is popular with young women not inclined towards the Hello Kitty stuff. Maybe the game will be marketed for that demographic?

8. Bob Hoskins only got the role of Mario because Roger Rabbit made him recognizable to the kids everywhere. Before that, Dustin Hoffman was begging for the role so he could be his kids' hero.

I've seen a Betty Boop cartoon or two in my day, but I don't remember them whatsoever.

9. I've seen quite a few thanks to a $5 DVD containing 10 of 'em. They're very odd, even a bit weird, and not at all like Looney Tunes or other well-known cartoon "brands".

I like Betty Boop, chiefly because she is (historically at least) totally different to the rest of today's mass-merchandised characters. I hope the new video game is as interesting as the original cartoons.

10. I've seen a bunch of them, mostly because Brisbane's local TV station likes to put them on in the mornings.

I really can't see any worthwhile game aspects to her...

11. Those old Betty Boop cartoons have, like, no grasp on reality. Check out the Snow White one if you get a chance, it is some freaky shit.
