DS Daily: What's missing?

We were at the GameStop, browsing through the old stuff as we tend to do, when we happened upon a copy of Heiankyo Alien. We were giving serious consideration to buying it, but in the end, the inconvenience of not being able to play it in our DS weighed heavily on our decision. So Heiankyo Alien sits unpurchased and unloved in a glass case, surrounded by copies of Mary Kate and Ashley: Crush Course.

Backwards compatibility may be one of the worst ideas in gaming, but it certainly does come in handy. Game Boy compatibility on the DS would make for a much friendlier device, and one with which we'd be even happier. What single feature do you desire? It could be anything that a previous handheld system has had, or a new feature.

Game Boy compatibility is the biggest thing missing from the DS, I think. I have a lot of original GB games and I'm running out of ways to play them. It seems silly to buy a GBA SP when I have a DS already!

I wish the DS had a camera built in.

GB/GBC compatibility is the one for me as well -- I have a rather large GB/GBC collection, and I still have a few games that I like to play every so often (for example, I just picked up Picross 2 recently). So, in addition to the DS, I carry a SP around with me as well to serve as a glorified GBC.

I'm sure Nintendo saved a few bucks not including GBC compatibility, but it sure would've been nice to have it :(

I also thing the GB/GBC compatability would have been nice. I just use my GBA to play my older games.

Nintendo built a special chip into the DS to be able to run the GBA games, They had to put another one in to support gb and gbc games.. It would be nice, but I think it's already awesome it supports GBA games.. Now the DS is also the best Gameboy advance..

And what needs to be made different is those STUPID friend codes.. just give me 1 login on the nintendo website and wifi channel or something..

Freakish. I actually bought a copy of Heiankyo Alien at a Gamestop last week, for no other reason than the feeling that my original GB collection was a bit small. I've been tempted multiple times to offer them a lump sum for their entire stock of GB carts because I'm afraid they're just going to throw them all in the trash one day from not selling.

Aren't there electronic reasons (beyond extra chips) that lead to not including GB/GBC compatibility? I'm sure I've read somewhere that the older cartridges need a higher voltage, or more juice in some other way, which would mean more of a difference than just an extra chip.

I also would like backwards compatibility to GB games, I have a ton, but I still have my SP to play them on. I pop in Solitaire all the time! :)

Wow, I can't believe you like Heiankyo Alien! I loved this game the first time I played it, when my cousin picked it up in Hong Kong and brought it to the US.

@releasethedogs: You're young! I was in middle school when this game came out.
