The latest issue of
Famitsu confirms the
rumored DS sequel to
Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.
Shiren the Wanderer DS 2 is actually based on the
second Game Boy game,
Sabaku no Majou (
Magic Castle of the Desert). It appears to be built on the same engine as the first DS game. The scans don't disappoint, featuring a ton of screens and character art of the new roguelike.
This new DS game will interact with the Wii
Shiren the Wanderer 3 in some way, allowing players to "lend a hand." We believe this means that
Shiren DS 2 players will be able to "
rescue"
Shiren 3 players over Wi-Fi, much like
Shiren DS players can rescue each other.

Let's hope that it sold well enough (& wasn't downloaded for R4s too much), to make localization viable. I'll be one of the first in line.

There is zero chance I will have finished the first one completely by the time the second one would be localized, but it would be a day one no brainer purchase for me.

While first and foremost I too SOOO hope we get to see this title over here (my latest conspiracy theory is that they may try some cute simultaneous release of this and Shiren 3 here since neither of these titles will be seen as the big AAA titles they were in Japan and releasing one of these games several months after the other would make little sense), I'm too curious what the plan is with this interconnectivity. While these are both Shiren games I'm under the impression that they'll have significantly different:
1) Game Mechanics.
2) Monsters.
3) Items.
The graphical and sound differences will be meaningless but how would they work stuff like item trading between the two?
What I could almost see is that perhaps Shiren 3 will have some a desert themed dungeon with the same name as one in Shiren DS 2 with at least the same number of levels. If a player from the one game makes a rescue in the other the actual dungeon they experience will have no real connection to what the original player went through other than finding the downed Shiren on the same numbered level (with no items exchangeable).

Unfortunately, the Famitsu scan only says that you can use "rescue points" you collect on the Wii version to buy items that can be used in Shiren 2. Nothing else beyond that. It would be really great if you could do a cross-platform rescue.

Oh, clever, that would be a LOT more transferable!

If this comes out in the US I will *cream*... the first game hasn't left my DS since it came out.
Time to email Sega!

Need this game now!
I've played a bit of the original GBC version on an emulator and it was fun, if a bit stripped down compared to the SNES/DS Shiren.
The new graphics look excellent - much much better than the GBC, but I'd really like to hear how they are changing/improving the gameplay.
