More After-school Boy screens to warm your heart

A few more screens of Konami's '50's-themed wandering-around-town adventure, Houkago Shonen, reveal -- well, some more wandering around town. We don't normally go for 'poignant' stuff, but this game looks so sweet that we can't resist being charmed.

One commenter last time likened the game to Shenmue, and that's fairly accurate, it would seem (forgetting about the time period for now.) This could be a Shenmue in which nobody is murdered, no giant kung fu street fights occur, and the protagonist not only cares about his friends, but seeks them out. It resembles Shenmue in its attempt to render a small Japanese town in loving detail, and explore the lives of the people in that town.

After-School Boy trailer reminds us of our gaming youth

One thing we love about video games is how the same technique can be adapted to completely different uses. Konami's Houkago Shonen (After-school Boy), for example, is presented using prerendered backgrounds with fixed camera angles, and 3D-modeled characters overlaid on top of those backgrounds. This display method was most prominently used in Final Fantasy VII and early survival horror games like Alone in the Dark.

Houkago Shonen makes no attempt to be epic and sweeping like a Final Fantasy game, nor does it intend to shock the player with intense scares. In fact, it's pretty much the opposite of both of those. And yet we can see the same visual elements at work, making this breezy, nostalgic game. And that, in turn, makes us feel nostalgic about early 3D games.

A special after-school game

Konami's Houkago Shounen (After-school Boy) is targeted directly at gamers' sense of nostalgia. The adventure game, set in 1975, casts the player as a young elementary student one month before he moves away, doing the best he can to have as much fun and spend as much time as possible with friends before saying goodbye.

The game features a town to explore, with childhood haunts like parks and candy shops, as well as a school (obviously) and a shrine. Time with friends is passed playing minigames-- the examples given by Famitsu include an eraser racing game and menko.

The subject matter and easygoing tone of the game draw immediate comparisons to Sony's Boku no Natsuyasumi (My Summer Vacation) games. Also similar to the Bokunatsu series: the low possibility of a localized version.
