Another Week in Europe

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon pair Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness reached mainland Europe this week and performed well on the whole, achieving lofty positions in the charts of Holland, Germany, Spain, and Italy (in the UK, they're occupying 21st and 24th place respectively). Cooking Guide (top ten in Ireland, Spain, and Italy) continues to help most Europeans to be better cooks (I emphatically do not count myself in that number), and would you check out that German top ten. Ho boy, go Deutschland!

Next week, we'll see whether or not Guitar Hero: On Tour can match the runaway success of the U.S. version. Will Activision's outside-the-box marketing techniques have worked?

Another Week in Europe

Last week, we nonchalantly predicted that the two Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games would lay siege to various European top tens. And we were right, if you replace "various European top tens" with "Germany." Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness came fourth and fifth respectively in Germany, 30th and 34th in Britain, and ... that's it. Such is the limited commercial appeal of the roguelike, we suppose.

Meanwhile, Cooking Guide: Can't Decide What to Eat? continues to look like a slow-burning hit, rising to fourth in Spain, second in Italy (yes, we're covering Italy from this week onwards! Go us!), and holding on to tenth place in Ireland.

Cradle of Rome is puzzlius maximus

Forget all about the brutality and violence of ancient Rome by playing a happy chappy puzzle game! It used to be a PC game (no surprise there), but Cradle of Rome now wants to invade the DS, build an empire and bask in the magnificence of togas and sandals. It's a standard "swap colored tiles around to match three colors" puzzle game, but the goal is to collect resources from each tile in order to build Rome itself.

A unique twist on a formula everyone is familiar with can't be all bad. You'll eventually be able to build, several historical monuments, including the Arch of Titus, the Temples of Venus and Saturn and everyone's favorite bloodbath, the Coliseum.

Cradle of Rome is set for an October 10th release in Europe, but on account of Rome being a Europe-exclusive city and all, there's no word of a release in other regions. Well, that's probably not the reason it isn't coming to America, but it should be import-friendly all the same. The first screenies are awaiting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down in the gallery. Super Dodgeball mini-clips: 'Boot country'

If you're having trouble making out what it is exactly that Lorenzo is tossing across the field, it's a giant pizza, heavy on the green peppers. Aksys' most recent video update for Super Dodgeball Brawlers showcases the special throws of Team Italy, a smooth bunch that insists on walking into every match wearing leather jackets, open arms and thumbs up, introducing themselves with an "Aaay!"

IGN also has a two-minute movie worth checking out, in which you can see the two teams actually trading shots with each other. We need more of this! As with the mini-clips, the video is soundless, but you'll get to see our paisanos throwing a vending machine at people's heads. Team Italy's celebratory pirouettes are worth watching, too!

Nintendo of Italy donates handhelds to hospital

In the latest show of charity for Nintendo, the company's Italian division donated a DS to every child in the pediatric ward at San Paolo Hospital. Nintendo also gave copies of Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros., and Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the kids to enjoy, as well as a few Wiis. Some cynics might cite ulterior motives for Nintendo's actions, but the fact is, you can't argue with a smile on a sick child's face.

Check out the video (with music that Super Mario Galaxy fans might recognize) of the event ~~embedded above~~ to get a nice feel-good start to the weekend.

Get serious with new DS Style screens

We're expecting a load of news when the Square Enix Party starts. For now, we've got new screens from the DS Style series, which is obviously too serious for parties. Specifically, new screens were released of Flower Blooming DS: Gardening Life, Shall We Listen to Classical Music on the DS?, and three World Walking map programs: Italy, France and Taiwan.

We could kind of see picking up a DS map program instead of a guidebook when we go on vacation, since we tend to take the DS with us anyway. We are definitely feeling a strong urge to buy the classical music "game" as well, since it's being developed by iNiS. Smart move, Squeenix.

Square Enix brings lifestyle titles to DS

Continuing its praiseworthy support for the Nintendo DS, Square Enix has announced DS Style, a new line of software for the casual gaming audience. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the company is venturing away from its RPG franchises for a moment, focusing instead on leisure activities like yoga, classical music, and gardening. It might not sound as exciting as SRPG battles or Chocobo mini-games, but different strokes for different folks.

Square Enix will also be releasing DS travel guides based on the popular World Walking tour book series in Japan. These guides will provide maps and other useful information for sightseers visiting countries like France or Thailand. Check past the post break for the full list of destination guides and verbose titles from Square Enix's DS Style lineup.

Capcom uses dead for Resident Evil DS Italy release

I'll be honest and say that I am an enormous fan of zombie movies and games. George Romero's films, excluding his latest, are some of my favorite movies to this day and the Resident Evil titles have always held a warm place in my heart. Ross Miller over at Joystiq posts about Capcom, in collaboration with Starcom, and their employment of undead appendages to advertise the release of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.

This campaign, which uses zombie hands bearing the phrase "questa mano é un biglietto da visita. Il resto del corpo ti sta cercando." That translates into the English phrase, "This hand is a business card. The rest of the body is trying to find you." The grave plots boldly display a sign, which reads "gli zombie sono in citta!" This translates into "the zombies are in the city!"
