Pet Shop Story launching with cuteness and executioners

The "other" game in Taito's catalogue is coming out very shortly in Japan, where aspiring Pet Shop Story owners can come together and scrub penguins. See, even if a pet shop that actually sold penguins existed, we're sure there would be more interesting things to do with them.

There's a launch party in Yokohama on July 13th, when an "entertainer" will meet and greet the first customers for Pet Shop Story. It's this guy, so don't bring the kids.

Go ahead and fawn over more screens of cuteness after the break. If you can handle disturbing happy-chappy music and grown Japanese men dressed as dogs, then check out the official website.

DS Fanboy Review: Disney Friends

No, this one isn't new, and it's probably not the kind of game most of you are looking for when you browse the racks, but if there are young gamers (or Disney freaks) in your life, Disney Friends is worth a second look. It's one of those games that's mystifying in its invisibility, the sort of thing that should be advertised until we desperately hunt down the remote just so we don't have to see that damned commercial again. Instead, it slipped by with nary a wave in the pool of DS games, and that's just criminal.

If you know a younger gamer who loved Nintendogs (or one of these people), this may be a surefire recommendation. Surprisingly, it's that good. But that seems to be par for the course when it comes to developer Amaze Entertainment -- who also worked on the GBA's incredible Spyro title last year. They take old franchises and licenses that no one seems to care about, and sometimes put out gems no one notices. Not all the time ... but when they're good, they're great. And for what it is, Disney Friends is pretty great.

Pet Shop Monogatari is unbearably cute

The only pet-care game we find ourselves caring about is also one of the few that isn't planned for release here. Taito's Pet Shop Monogatari DS is a pet-adoption RPG with Cooking Mama art and penguin washing. Penguin washing! We usually react coolly to the proliferation of pet games on the DS, but this one has the distinct possibility of being interesting, due to Taito's involvement.

There's also the fact that it's uncommonly cute, even for what it is. Screenshot after screenshot proves this point adorably. If there's even the slightest chance that a game this cute can also be non-terrible, we're on board.

Pet Shop Story: Taito's other game

Last year, Taito announced that they were supporting the DS in a big way, revealing Arkanoid DS, The Legend of Kage 2, and Exit DS to go with Cooking Mama 2. Then shortly afterward, they unveiled Space Invaders Extreme and ... this. Pet Shop Story DS is the only one of Taito's TGS games that has yet to be released in Japan, and it is the one that gets by far the least attention.

Pet Shop Story, a sequel to a Game Boy franchise, puts players in charge of -- you guessed it -- a library pet store. The player character and her mother have moved from the big city into a small town in which nobody has any pets. You interview the customers to determine what kind of pet they would like, then you go out into nature to catch them, Pokémon-style. That's right, you catch wild animals to sell to children. That means that not only can you sell cats (including Scottish folds) and dogs, but baby bears and wild boars as well.

Pet Shop Story also features the same totally cute character design style as Cooking Mama. The apron-wearing mother even bears a striking resemblance to the Mama we know and don't understand.

Nintendo fails to announce Nintencats, SEGA steps in

We know what you're thinking, and yes, the mere fact that this post is related in some way to our feline friends is a good enough reason to break out the lolcats.

But we digress. Ever since the delightful Nintendogs launched and sold around a gazillion copies, we've been patiently waiting for a feline-based sequel, a follow-up that would undoubtedly attract the cat-loving half of the civilized world to Nintendo's handheld. Alas, "Nintencats" has (bafflingly) failed to emerge, so SEGA has dutifully decided to offer us Yume Neko DS, a game that allows players to pet, poke, and play with their cat in much the same way as we mucked around with our mutts in Nintendogs. It's hitting Japan next spring, though there's no news yet on a western localization.

Past the break, we've embedded a pair of trailers, one a demo of the game in action (worth a look, as the cats themselves are nicely animated), and the other a Japanese TV spot for the extremely sinister-looking "Yume Neko Smile," a cuddly toy spin-off from the game that probably comes to life at night to embark on bloodthirsty rampages, leaving nothing in its horrifying wake alive.

The DS Life: God Bless You, Mr. Crabs

The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handhelds and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

Mr. Crabs was an extraordinary creature, brilliant but brash. Always dreaming up new adventures, he promised us all that he was destined for big things. We pleaded with Mr. Crabs, "Don't go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to." But he shrugged off our pleas, setting out one day without notice to explore the world. It was that devil-may-care attitude of his that we all loved, and, ultimately, it was also what lead to his demise.

We gather here today to celebrate Mr. Crab's death by remembering not only how he lived, but also how his skeleton lived during the months long after his crustacean soul's passing. Scuttle sideways past the break and read on for the story of how a young crab in Santa Cruz became an international superstar with his debut on DS Fanboy's front page.

More mallowy Marsh artwork

Even without knowing a single thing about Maya and Marsh, we would've fallen in love with the two companions anyway, just based on the character designs for Eigo wo Taberu Fushigi na Ikimono Marsh (Mysterious English-Eating Animal Marsh). "Love" is a strong word, you might say. Well, so are our feelings for Dimple Entertainment's pet-sim/English-trainer.

We have some new art samples for the game in our gallery which you should really check out. The simple style is like a mix of Kurt Halsey romance and Kogepan charm; it's no wonder we can't resist it. So what if we'll never see this quirky title localized for the US? And who cares if its English isn't perfect? The minute we saw this scene of Marsh flopped next to its friend, Cocoa, our hearts were won over.

Love Cat Life shows love for dogs, too

Specifically, Nintendogs. And more specifically, the cash generated by Nintendogs. Forgive us for being cynical, but Love Cat Life does look exceedingly familiar. But for our (hypothetical) pet simulator money, Love Cat Life wins over Nintendo's masterpiece, for mostly hilarious reasons:
  • Simulated litterboxes
  • Riding a little cat-sized truck over a ramp
  • Meowing music game!
We started off being sarcastic, but we just convinced ourselves. It was the music game that did it.

K.K. Slider featured on new Pet Shop Boys single?

UK Dance guys Pet Shop Boys apparently have a great appreciation for Animal Crossing's musical K-9 K.K. Slider. See, one of our fine readers recently noticed a bit of similarity in a song sung by the Boys and one performed on Saturday night by K.K. Slider. In his online blog, mrdiscopop posts segments comparing the two, which honestly do sound somewhat similar. If the band's name is unfamiliar, you've probably heard their hit West End Girls.

[Thanks Mark!]
