UH, NOT.
Nintendo of Europe have officially stomped upon the idea that a DS redesign would be shown this week, labeling previous reports as "pure rumour and speculation". Note the added "u" in "rumour", which clearly indicates that this news comes directly from the European Nintendo and not, for example, Nintendo of Guam. We just don't trust those guys.Of course, this doesn't mean that a DS redesign isn't still in the works. If you recall correctly, the DS has already been spruced up once before, marking for a big improvement over the clunky model first seen at E3 2004 (as shown above). In addition, The Reggie has previously stated that a flashier DS would reach our sweaty hands eventually - this denial only stems from the fact that we were expecting it to arrive a little too soon. My prediction is that we'll see the new DS at this year's E3, complete with Revolution communication and matching aesthetics.
What are your expectations? Are you disappointed or relieved?

I am soooo relieved. We have all just started getting used to the fact that the DS rocks. The games are finally here. Wi-fi is finally here. The DS is flying off store shelves. Keep things the way they are now while DS is at a highpoint. Then release a new sleek version to promote the biggest game release in a decade, New Super Mario Bros.
Tie the games release and the news DS design together with a nostalgic ad campaign that reminds us all of our youths and the NES, SNES, etc.

It will depend on whether or not the design changes are fuctional or purely cosmetic. If they just change the form factor or (gasp!) the GBA slot, then I'm not interested.
However, if there's some added functionality (such as some integrated VOIP etc) then I might consider the upgrade. But not until it's out in the wild for a bit first.

I bought my DS a few weeks before Mario Kart came out and I'm so happy with it. I really don't mind the design of it. If they do come out with a Nintendo DS SP or something of the like, I'll buy it. I'm already quite tempted to get the all white import DS or the charcoal import DS, I scoped them out at an import game store in chinatown NYC :P

Heh, my original post had a different slant to it, but then I decided it would be more fun trying to trick a few people. :) It's because I'm evil.

Did anyone actually think they would announce a new redesign of the DS when it outsells in Japan?
It won't come before this design of DS have dropped quite much in sales. Really, it would be quite idiotic for Nintendo to release a better model when the first one sells great.

You traded your DS on the RUMOR that a redesign would be ANNOUNCED today? That didnt even mean it would be out anytime soon. gg, you burned yourself :P
The "new" DS will have to be seen to determine whether I upgrade or not... but I have been extremely eager to see some news. With this day coming and going, I guess I'll just wait until E3 to see if anything comes up then. Until then, I'm still quite happy with the current system.

Normally Nintendo doesn't comment on rumours such as these for the obvious reason that an eventual "No comment" response will reveal it to be true.
"Does the Revolution use some VR system?"
"No"
"Can you download GameCube games to the Revolution?"
"No, there's not enough storage"
"Will you be able to transfer temporary copies of old games bought using the Revolution onto the DS?"
"...no comment"
THAT is why Nintendo doesn't usually comment on rumours, even if they're completely false.
Anyway, my point is that this shows an interesting situation where sales would suffer if they didn't deny the rumour so they had to break away from their usual rumour policy.

I'm relieved. Just got a DS for Christmas, so it's nice that it's not dated already. Love the games so far, great system!
