Analyst details possible new DS hardware

Evan Wilson, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, says that Nintendo has completed the design for a new DS model. How does he know? "Contacts!" According to Wilson's secret oracle, the new hardware will ditch the GBA slot for an even thinner profile, and add some storage media and enlarged screens.

Could this new model be designed to take advantage of the rumored game downloading service? If GBA games were downloadable, the lack of a GBA slot and the storage would make a lot of sense together.

According to Wilson, Nintendo has been holding off on releasing this new model until sales drop worldwide. The truth is, they were just waiting for me to get a DS Lite. Seriously, it happens every time.

[Thanks, Eztips!]

DS Daily: Problems and solutions

After seeing this thread over at NeoGAF, we spent a little time thinking about the DS Lite. Obviously, we're fans, but we're not going to say it's perfect. There can be problems at times. We're not sure we're ready for a whole new redesign (though we don't hate Shogmaster's mockup design at all), but if someone handed us a free new DS with a few issues fixed (d-pad, anyone?), we wouldn't argue. So we thought we'd ask you: what would you change? What would you fix? What do you think the Lite didn't address when it moved up from the DS?

DS Daily: DS ... Liter?

It's almost (min)E3 time, and you know what that means -- wanton speculation. That's right, game fans, it's time to hop on the rumor train. So what's the story? You won't believe it. No, really.

An all new DS. And no, we don't mean a new color. We here in America, we don't get new colors, because we apparently don't buy enough Brain Age.

As rumors go, the idea of yet another DS redesign is not terribly un-possible. We saw several versions of the GBA, after all. But seriously, how small can we really go? Sometimes we already confuse it with the checkbook -- and our pals with larger hands occasionally complain of a little cramping as it is. And are bigger screens or a streamlined design necessary? Do we need a different (better?) DS? You decide.

Rumor: possible DS redesign in the works

Just what we needed -- wild speculation about the DS. This time it comes in the form of a possible redesign being reported on various Japanese blogs. Or at least, Jeux-France is reporting that the rumor is snaking its way through the 'net. So the French translated the Japanese, and we've translated them (and surely no information has been lost in this process, because we're all professionals here), and here's the word: bigger screens. The completely true and accurate translated report says both screens will be slightly larger than Lite version -- less than an inch of difference on both -- and that the redesign will debut in Japan next year.

There's no doubt it would sell, but do we need bigger screens?

New DS unveiled!

Old clunky DS

UH, NOT.

Nintendo of Europe have officially stomped upon the idea that a DS redesign would be shown this week, labeling previous reports as "pure rumour and speculation". Note the added "u" in "rumour", which clearly indicates that this news comes directly from the European Nintendo and not, for example, Nintendo of Guam. We just don't trust those guys.

Of course, this doesn't mean that a DS redesign isn't still in the works. If you recall correctly, the DS has already been spruced up once before, marking for a big improvement over the clunky model first seen at E3 2004 (as shown above). In addition, The Reggie has previously stated that a flashier DS would reach our sweaty hands eventually - this denial only stems from the fact that we were expecting it to arrive a little too soon. My prediction is that we'll see the new DS at this year's E3, complete with Revolution communication and matching aesthetics.

What are your expectations? Are you disappointed or relieved?
