Which is a bit ridiculous, really. Sometimes "ridiculous" works, however, and we can't see any problem with using that term when it comes to a portly plumber crushing sentient mushrooms, blasting fireballs from his palms and disappearing down mysterious pipes. Jeux France now reports (via the latest issue of Nintendo Power) that Mario's forthcoming return to the world of platforming (after a brief hiatus in the land of sports) will feature no less than 80 levels, as well as a return of all the mini-games from Super Mario 64 DS. Given how long it took us to get over that Pair-a-Gone addiction last time, this could potentially be viewed as bad news.Follow the link for some scans of the magazine, more screenshots of New Super Mario Bros. and an ugly reminder that the accursed month of April still stands between us and the game's early May release date.

Doesn't super princess peach have more? Keep in mind that, unfortunately, nearly half the levels are n00b short.

80 levels is a lot, but it still doesn't top Super Mario World, which had 92 levels if I remember correctly. And I think that was *before* you uncovered the secret world.
I am incredibly excited to play this game. I hope it doesn't disappoint. Stupid April. What with its showers and bringing May flowers. Grrrrr...
I hope to see the return of the more familiar power-ups, like the cape/raccoon suit. I'd also love to see the return of the Tanuki suit.

My biggest concern is how many levels are their going to be per world. It was mentioned in Nintendo Power that you would not be able to save your game between levels but only between worlds. If there are 8 worlds; That means 10 levels per world. Which makes a LONG time between save points.
I am sure you will be able to suspend play while on the run. I just hate suspending a game only to come back hours later and tryign to remember where I am in a game.

P.S. Metroid Prime Hunters and Tetris DS come out today!

Hmm... a return of the same mini games? Too bad its not new mini-games. At least it means I can get rid of the Marios 64 DS cart I have, since the mini games were about all i played on it.

A classic re-made.
It looks like they didn't mess with it too much. They really didn't need to. Who didn't like the original Mario bros? I still play the rom every once in a while on my gbamp, or those times when I dust off my old nintendo.
It sure does look nicer though.

Hmmm....maybe if I connected a car battery and some electrodes on the D-Pad and buttons....that way when I don't respond to the problems fast enough....
Brain Training in several jolts a day. That will help me remember when I suspended the game in front of an army of Gumbas!

Whoa, 80 levels. This game would be cooler if it was Wi-Fi compatable though.

In contrast consider this:
The original SMB had 8 worlds with 4 levels each. 32 total.
SMB2 had even less. 7 worlds with 3 levels each except the last world which had 2.
SMB2 Japan (Lost Levels) had more than the original. The same 32 levels plus an extra 9th world with 34 levels and a set of ABCD levels making it 40 levels.
SMB3 on the other hand has 90 levels. Not counting all the Hammer Brother encounters. But including all the special levels like the desert sun chasing you, the castles and airships, the pyramid, the giant piranha plant levels, etc.
Super Mario World had 96 EXITS, but only 72 levels. To be fair, the levels were sometimes huge. But still. Damn.
Yoshi's Island has 6 worlds with 8 levels each and an extra level. 2 of each world are castles. That's 54 levels. The GBA version had an extra 6 special levels.
So it looks like SMB3 is still winner in level amount, but 80+ is nothing to sneeze at. NEW Super Mario will be second place in the amount of actual levels.

Not exactly. If memory serves me right, they're adding multiplayer support for most (if not all) of the minigames. In a sense, they're kinda newish! :D

What do you mean by exits? What's the difference between exits and levels? And why are there more levels then exits?

It's actually more exits than levels. In Super Mario World, you had sometimes secret exits in a level that opened different paths on the world map. So often you had to finish one level more than once by finding different exits if you wanted to find all the secrets. That's why they count in exit or level number. Depends whether you think playing a level twice or three times count or not.
