Don't look at these new Super Mario screenshots

As tempting as it may be, you must restrain yourself from following this link to brand new, uh, New Super Mario Bros. screenshots. And don't even think about checking out these cool character renders at the British Gaming Blog. Trust us, you'll be better off living a life without the constant pining and relentless desire to flatten Goombas on your DS. After viewing this gallery of fireball-flinging, block-bashing, shell-skipping goodness, it's quite likely that your thoughts will simply become dominated by Nintendo's portly plumber. Following that, you'll simply start swelling into a throbbing ball of anger as you realize that the game is only due for release in May.

Do you know who's keeping you from enjoying New Super Mario Bros.? It's April. If you were to go on a violent spree of calendar defacing, know that we'd fully back you up. Curse you, April! Curse you!

Thats looking really nice! This ones definately getting my money! :D

The simplicity of the controls and gameplay is what made this one a classic. That and the characters. :D I think this one is at the top of my wish list.

I'm predicting a simultaneous release of this game and the DS lite in the North American market. At least, that's what I'm hoping for. :)

But it's ugly 3d models in a sidescroller... It's like the late 90's all over again.

Give me rendered sprites over clunky models any day.

I can't tell from those screenshots, but is there any 3D going on in this game, or is it all just 2D sprites?

Please Please Please be just sprites, it would look so much better.

It's 3D over 2D backgrounds if I'm not mistaken. Also, anybody have a link to these screens that doesn't go to Nintendo.com? My work web filter blocks Nintendo. So I am forced to not look at these screens.

There's a link outside of Nintendo.com.

This game looks amazing. I really hope it doesn't have any stupid touchscreen gimmick features. I hope that the levels are ALL just D-Pad and buttons, and they leave the touchscreen stuff for outside of the levels. Bonus stages, etc.

How can you say this game looks amazing? They're using models from eight years ago! Mario is so jagged it makes my eyes hurt. ESPECIALLY when he's huge as in some of the screen shots.

I don't think I'd notice the awful 3d so much if it wasn't on top of such a beautiful 2d background and nice, crisp 2d foreground elements. I mean, the 3d mario works in Mario 64, but then again the whole game looks that way so you just accept it as retro and move on. But this? Ugh. Why not just use sprites?

Give me Mario World on my GBA any day.

Hold on a sec, what happened to the stupidly big Mario and playing together with Luigi parts? I don't see any of that here!

Odd, you're right. They seem to have removed a few pictures from the gallery. At any rate, see akward 3d mario at IGN! :)

Man, people will always find something to complain about..

The 3d graphics are great. If you watch a video of the game in action, you'll see how much more animation the characters have in this game compared to the 2d marios. I love 2d games, but this is just beautiful.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the only video of the game in action right now. Now you can't hardly tell anything from that, graphically; though I will agree with you that there's more animation than in previous marios. However, you can't tell me that in some of the screenshots, the models just look somehow out of place admidst their 2d background.

Now, when I see a more polished gameplay video I may eat my words, until then I will await this game with but a passing interest.

Saxon - I totally know what you mean with the screenshots... When I first saw the game I was totally thrown off, but I think it looks a whole lot more appealing in motion. I saw a few other videos over at IGN, but I think you need the insider subscription to watch them. Either way, it looks like the gameplay is gonna be amazing, definitely worth giving it a shot when it comes out!

visually, it looks like it's just a crisper version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong. But the gameplay is all that matters, and I'm confident that that will be of the highest quality.

I'm confused. The name says New Super Mario Bros., but some of those levels are clearly levels from the original Super Mario Bros. So is this a remake then, rather than a new game?
