The folks over at Gamebrink have managed to import Nintendo's mp3 player add-on for the DS and walk away with a sour taste in their mouth. Without the inclusion of a SD card in the package, as well as headphones, in order for one to actually use this thing it'll cost over $100 bucks when all is said and done. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't allow for playlists, the whole package doesn't sound too appealing. It's sad, really, as we would've enjoyed having the free pocket. There's a short video of the mp3 player intro screen embedded into the post, past the jump.

Hmmm, is it just me, or is that video completely uninformative?
I'd also like to know if it can play while its closed. Anyone know?

Yes, it can play while it's closed. The MP3 player is a slot-2 (GBA) cartridge, although it does not support the GBA or GBA SP. These cartridges do not support the sleeping mode of the Nintendo DS so the music will keep playing while the Nintendo DS is closed.

Supercard + Moonshell = MP3 player (and yes, it plays when it's closed).
Oh, and it plays homebrew. I don't see the allure to this piece of junk MP3 add-on.

Why in the world would they expect to pay $50 for a 1GB Secure Digital card? Newegg has them for $11 to $12... and even Best Buy offers a pack of three 1GB cards for about $50...

Well good job guys, not only have you imported the EU version and labled it (Japan), they also most likely neglected to think that this title is now, what... a year and a half old in Japan, going under the name PlayYAN (and PlayYAN Micro).
No SD card and headphones gives you the option to choose whatever you want to pay for SD cards or headphones, instead of over-charging you for them in true Nintendo of Europe fashion.
You may all be awe-struck with your Nintendo America department, but outside of Japan and America, Nintendo blows hard. Just live here for 6 weeks and find out.

Wait... I'm confused.
MP3 and Video playback have been available on my M3 Lite since the day I bought it, and it supports microSD cards.
Why would anyone consider buying this thing over an M3 or a Supercard?

Well I hear a lot of bitching so here's the fact. If you want to only play MP3s... Yes ONLY music, it wouldn't make sense to pay double to get a M3 right? It's just pop and pop and and plug headphones. Correct? I totally agree that M3 has much MUCH more potential. I promise if anyone sends me one for free I will gladly sign the mailmans digipad.

So what all of you guys are saying is that this thing can play music, but how musch can it hold?
It can play music with the ds screen closed because of the backwards compatible gba cartage slot 2...but this mp3 player won't work on the gba sp 1 and 2.
second of all that video that was SUPPOSE to be showing off the mp3 player wasn't very helpful
at all.
I consider this mp3 player for the ds a waste of time.
My advice, buy a play yan.

i bought it a month ago, and it's 30 euros down here, with some cents off of that if you're buying online. the problem with you needing an additional sd-card is truely sad, especially if you also needed an additional sd-card-reader like me ; )
but you could use those things for other purposes like your digicam. the one thing that should make me wanna throw it in the toilet and flush it into the sewers of new new york is the fact that this thing is designed for the game boy advance, with still a strong bit peeping out of the handheld. so if you put it inside a ds lite, YOU HAVE GOT ONE THIRD of the player inside the handheld and the other two thirds just outside. this is truely bad product design. it's just a plain and stupid piece of hardware. no thanks for the music.
