Just think, this summer we could be filling in squares and making pictures just like they do in Europe. Well, you could be. Availability isn't the issue for us; being able to buy the game isn't going to magically make us less awful at Picross.

Remind why this game is such a big deal? Is filling in little boxes really fun or something?

There are several excellent online "picross"-type games as well. http://pbn.homelinux.com/pbn/index.html is one of the classics, http://www.griddlers.net/ is another, and both are very free. And actually recently I tried Descartes Enigma ( http://www.kaser.com/descart.html ) and discovered that I really like the way the user interface shows different numbers in the rows or columns to help you use numerical logic better.
Of course none of those are really portable without a laptop, which is really the whole point of Picross DS. However, if the puzzles are all limited to 10x10 through 20x20 or so, I'd rather do one of the other choices listed above.

@Oneiromancer
The size of the puzzles go up to 25x20.. pretty large. And the themes of each puzzle (coring an apple, tearing paper, bullet holes) make this title A+
