Anime fans are crazy. This is incontrovertible fact. They'll spend money on pretty much anything (last link NSFW) bearing the likeness of one of their favorite characters. But will they buy a DS card with a database of information about anime shows? Sunrise thinks so. This is whole point (from their words) of mecha: technical details. They are more fans of plastic models than anything else. They hunt down every technical detail to recreate it in models. Worst part: animators are also into it and are very very very careful with technical details. From one TV shot, Gundam fan is capable telling what next Gundam products will be launched. Some call them insane, Japs call them otaku.
To draw a parallel, look at the StarWars fanidiots - Gundam is the same, just in Japan. Ironically, if you would compare many features you would find the Gundam animes and StarWars series similar. They even appeared literally at the same time.
