Square Enix told petitioners yesterday that their pile of signatures was in vain -- there are "no current plans" to produce a remake of the wildly popular and much-in-demand Final Fantasy VII. Of course, earlier this year, Final Fantasy III producer Hiromichi Tanaka did not rule such a remake out, but merely said it was a matter of timing. By timing, we can only assume that Square Enix means to go through Final Fantasy V and VI first, after finishing up with the fourth installment of the series, which is as it should be. Right, Square Enix? Right?... please?
The sheer size of the title is often cited as a reason such a remake may be unsuitable for the DS, but we would just like to point out that such obstacles are not insurmountable. After all, Archaic Sealed Heat, our favorite game that we've never seen, is set to be released on a larger-than-normal game cart.

If they end up making a remake it will probably come out for ps3 anyway... taking it to ds would be more like a port than a remake

FF5 was already made for GBA, I'm not convinced they would do another remake specifically targetted at DS.

Give it a REST people!. FFVII deserves every bit of hype it has recieved.
I like it because of it's story and it's characters. 7 is the only FF game that I actually remember what the characters names are, and they all had pretty sweet backstory's(except Yuffie).
This game is also PERFECT for the DS as it has a ton of side quests and mini-games. It's also a good 50-60 hours long, which I'd say would be a worthwhile $30-$40 purchase.
It does have some problems(lego graphics, melodramatic and confusing at parts) as all games do. ANd if you don't like it, hey, guess what?! They have FF1-6 available for you to play! Now excuse us while we wait to play OUR favorite FF.

they could use the GBA slot for additional memory to store the full motion videos on. I'm sure with the advances in video and audio compression they could fit those videos on the additional space afforded by a card in the gba slot.

I love FFVII, but a remake is the very, very last thing I want to see. Why? Too much room for ruination, especially with all the current spinoffs taken into account. Even with a straight port, Square Enix would most likely shoehorn some new (and possibly unwelcome) content in.

I just want to preface this message by first saying that Final Fantasy VII is one of my all-time favorite games and I love my DS, but...the DS is the worst contemporary platform for a remake. Put this bitch on the PS3.

If it goes on PS3, it should go on 360 too. Not because of the people who don't want to get a PS3 because of their 'priciples', but thoswe who have a 360, but don't want to buy a PS3 either because they can't afford it or don't want to buy it for this one game. STOP THE EXCLUSIVES >.

I think they're more likely to milk this one and release a full remake on the home consoles before they do a portable one. And even then, they're probably more likely to "upgrade" it for the PSP than the DS.
Still, space shouldn't be a massive concern, I don't think. Compression's improved drastically since those days, and the screen resolution of the DS would improve that even further. 256MB isn't much compared to the, what, 2.1GB the original took up (it was three discs, right?), but still, it can be managed.

One way or another, FF7 needs a remake. Too much of the game was rushed, and it deserves a better translation (and a few rewrites here and there if you ask me).

As much as i like the playing the first FFVII and seeing all this backstory/spi offs is great i hate the people who are like OMG all the FF players like FFVII mabey i should to even though i have not played it i think that they should come out with a remake for gamers like me who took days/months trying to find it 10 years after its release now that their coming out with FFVII spinoffs i think its would be a great idea to release the Core game because so many people dont know the story behind it!

Please please please please please please please please please please Square, now you HAVE to make this ... just so we can watch shadowchaoscontrol kill him/herself!
Seariouslly, as a HUGE FF7 fanboy I do NOT want to see it get PORTed (yes, I agree with schuyler it would be more of a port than a remake on the DS).
How about waiting until Square are ready for a PS3 version, then create all of the FMV scenes in real-time? Create the models and unlock a way to pause and control the camera. See all of the Cloud / Tifa / Aeris 3-way action from any angle you want! Sweeeet!
The only additional content I would like to see is explaining some of the nebulous things that go on, but never get explained. I mean, Square have explained some bits that were hanging in other games (Dirge of Cerberus, for example), and we've had to watch the movie to glean some more, but to have it all in one bigger story (unlockable explanatory manga or just script?) would make the title worth buying AGAIN.
