DS Daily: Experienced

I was reminded by Leigh Alexander's adorable childhood Phantasy Star II fanworks of my own recent, abortive attempts to replay the game. What was shockingly doable when I was 11 is now painful and a little tedious. We have been coddled by role-playing games with sensible level progressions and relatively small dungeons (with automaps, even -- when was the last time you got graph paper out for a dungeon?)

With Final Fantasy III already out and IV on the way, as well as Dragon Quests aplenty, Ys, Shiren the Wanderer and even remakes of PlayStation-era RPGs, the DS is going to be neck-deep in antiquated RPGs soon. How many of you have managed to get through an old-school RPG in the modern era? If so, did you have experience with them when they were new?

I've played all the old Final Fantasys and Dragon Quest games but the only console RPG that I have ever finished is Dragon Quest 8. I usually lose interest or come to a point where something is too hard and I get frustrated and then I stop playing and can't pick it up again. Since when I come back to it I would have forgotten what I was going to do next.
I personally wouldn't mind RPGs that are a tad shorter and always tell you exactly what to do next.

But I have a hard time finishing any game so I guess it's more my problem than a problem with the games.

I downloaded Final Fantasy onto a NES emulator on my cell phone last year and actually played through the entire thing... leveling characters out in the field is a good way to pass the time while waiting in line for things...

I played through and loved Dragon Quest 1 and 3 for the game boy color (was 3 on the advance?), but never got far in 2, which was on the same cart as 1. I also didn't get too far in Final Fantasy 1, and never started 2, which was also on the same GBA cart. I'm only 22, so I was too young when all those originally came out.

Phantasy Star II is the best RPG ever released. Period.

I began my RPG journey with Phantasy Star IV, so my personal opinion is that it's the best.

I never played rpg at all when i owned the original nintendo or the snes so when i went full fledged back into the scene agian around the time of the release of the original ds fat i was rusty and had a very hard time figuring out any rpg. I gained my rpg legs over trail and error but when i played final fantasy III on the ds i had a horrible time. It let me leave areas and towns without completing all the tasks to proceed with the story and once a hint was given it didn't repeat it. To say the least i was not happy with the gameplay except for the graphics and cutscenes. i love revenant wings though and i loved pokemon pearl to death. Considering ffIII was a classic i'm thinking it was my fault for not being up to the challenge. I am gonna try ffIV, and dragon quest IV wish me luck.
