Square Enix spent the morning revealing its lineup of "fresh new faces and timeless classics" that the company plans to exhibit this week at E3, attaching US release dates to its upcoming titles:
We're jumping on our beds with glee over the fact that we'll be receiving
Front Mission so early after the localization was announced, but several disappointing details failed to escape our attention --
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire,
It's a Wonderful World,
FFIV DS, and
Dragon Quest IX's absence; and
Ring of Fates' distant date. The multiplayer ARPG and its
DS Lite bundle are scheduled to hit Japan this August 23rd.

Having never come out in the US, the
Itadaki Street franchise is somewhat of a mystery. But the series has been thrust into our attention with its entry on the DS and the included
Mario and
Dragon Quest characters. We know we like the characters, and we are vaguely aware of a board game of some kind, but how exactly does the game play?
Siliconera, who previously helped us
identify all the
Dragon Quest folks, has a piece up now about the game that's half review, half tutorial. It's an excellent resource for the
Itadaki curious, and should help you in your soul-searching about whether or not you're interested in a Japanese board game about property.

Yoichi Wada, head of
Square Enix, believes that handhelds are the way to go, at least until the next generation settles down somewhat. Wada told the Financial Times "There is a new breed of gamers in the market – we have to make games for all kinds of people." Which means, of course, the DS.
It should be no surprise that the company has a lot of faith in portable systems, since their
flagship franchise has moved to the DS. Still, it is a little unusual for Wada to publicly speak against next-gen systems with so many important Square Enix games headed to the PS3. "There are too many specs – and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection and a deep knowledge of gaming – these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years they will fare better."

Confession time! We haven't played a
Dragon Quest game since the first one. And that was in the ancient times-- we were basically playing it on an oscilloscope. As such, we don't know any of the characters besides
slimes (who could forget slimes?).
If you're like us (old and anachronistic), you might need a lesson on who all these adorable
Dragon Quest characters are in
Itadaki Street. That is exactly what Siliconera has done, because we asked for it just now. Oh, there we go with the anachronism again.
Finally, we know the names and origins of Guy Who Looks Kinda Like Dante and Spikey-Haired Guy. Now we're ready for the US version of the game, which will probably never exist.

Itadaki Street DS apparently didn't have enough characters to choose from-- the entire
Mario and
Dragon Quest casts are just too limiting, you know? Besides, nobody can relate to wacky characters like
a plumber and
a plumber's brother, who is also a plumber.
Square Enix has nicely included some characters who will do less to draw players' attention away from the
serious business of strategic board game play: "Boy" and "Girl." They look just like we would if we were three feet tall and didn't have noses!

Attendees at the Square Enix party 2007 will be able to pick up a ton of fantastic gear, including the pictured clock. The 'Ivalice Alliance' inscription is taken from the Final Fantasy universe. Other things up for grabs include
Final Fantasy XI treasure coins,
Dragon Quest pin badges, coaster sets and manga. The party takes place this weekend in Chiba, Japan.
All this swag doesn't come for nothing -- you're expected to earn your game memorablia. The requirements aren't too onerous though; most of them involve collecting stamps from the various game stands present at the party.
You could just wait for this stuff to find its way onto your online auction site of choice in the not-too-distant future.

We don't usually sit around wishing we lived in Japan, but sometimes there's an overriding temptation that throws everything into a tailspin ... and wouldn't you know that dastardly Square Enix is behind it. The source of our agony? That the fabulous franchise festival known as the Square Enix Party 2007 is going to go on without us.
The pain.
Thanks to the series of tubes that connects us with Japan, we at least have loads of video to look forward to -- and now that SE has announced a formal list of titles that will be available at the event (both playable and video-only), we're starting to get a little excited. Playable games on display include
FFXII: Revenant Wings,
Itadaki Street,
It's a Wonderful World, and the new
Crystal Chronicles for the DS. That may in fact be more Final Fantasy than we could shake a stick at. Also verified: an unknown Final Fantasy title, but we have to admit that it may be attached to those other guys. We won't begrudge them that; we've got plenty of games here to drool over.

Square Enix's
Itadaki Street DS, schedule for this summer in Japan, is shaping up to be a pretty good looking little game. We can't wait to see more on the
WiFi multiplayer, since that's what board games are built for. Is it too much to hope that this one sees an English release? Ponder that while you check out the screens, which are hidden away behind the jump.

Despite the fact that some franchises just don't port well, the subject of whether or not any given property should make an appearance on the DS inevitably comes up. Square Enix is bringing their big franchises to the handheld.
Mortal Kombat will be making an appearance.
Katamari Damacy, however, rolled on by. We could go on, but we figure you get the drift. What we
want to know is -- which franchises do you really want to see on the DS, and which ones do you hope stay far, far away?

You know how we are about Square Enix around here. If the SE collective trundled over and popped us in the face, we'd be all right with that. At least, we could get over it. Because we're fans, you know? Serious

Remember those recent
Itadaki Street scans? Dedicated Nintendo fan and amazing translator CTU Kyoto has put them all into English for your reading pleasure. Now you can read all about the Volcano of Death and Jessica's "charming assets" without flipping back and forth through a kanji reference until you give up and toss it angrily through a window.
Maybe that last one was just us. Enjoy the updated scans, and thanks again, CTU Kyoto! Having some idea of the information packed into these sets gets us charged up over the game. Too bad it's not finished ... we're ready to throw down over WiFi.

Do we have any armchair translators in the house? Jeux France had two big, beautiful scans for the upcoming Itadaki Street DS, and we're all dying for a little more info than what we
have right now, particularly in regard to the multiplayer aspects. While we'll miss the
Final Fantasy crew, we're looking forward to the blend of Mario and
DQ.

Itadaki Street has been praised and favored over the years by Square-Enix fans for its combination of classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest characters and placing them in a particularly quirky board game.
For a few years now, Itadaki Street has made appearances in Japan with the same concept. But it appears that the wind has changed for the game. Judging from the scan found on the NeoGAF forums, a key element seems to be missing -- Final Fantasy.
In place of Cloud rests another all time favorite of the game business, Mario. Why we are sad to see Aeris and Yuffie leave, the new addition to the team seems interesting. Yet it leaves one question -- is this a temporary set back or permanent change?

At this month's Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix is gonna be all about the DS. Half the playable titles they plan to show are for the Nintendo handheld. Now that's what we call a coup.
Look for lots of news and video later this month from
Chocobo no Mahou Ehon (
Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book),
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, and
Final Fantasy III.
We know you're especially excited about that last, since we never bring you
Final Fantasy III news.

Dragon Quest, as we all know, is getting a lot of recognition. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is shaping up rather well even though we swear we are looking at another episode of Dragon Ball Z every time we get a new screenshot. Doesn't the main character look like Trunks with extra crazy hair?
Too bad Pokemon already grabbed the main concept of the game or DQM:J would really cause a ruckus in this industry. We realize that not everything similar to Pokemon can be traced back to it but you have to admit the similarities are present.
Joker doesn't have a set release date for Japan and who really knows if we will see it stateside. It would be a nice change of pace for Pokemon lovers or haters.
