DS Daily: How much do graphics matter?
Handhelds have come a long way over the years, and even the GBA can churn out some impressive looking games, to say nothing of our beloved DS and a certain other handheld. Even so, graphics on handheld games don't really rival those in other consoles, for obvious reasons. For the past year, graphics have been one of the biggest topics in the gaming industry, and it's at the heart of some of the discussions concerning the next-gen console war. Despite all the attention given to graphics, the DS -- pretty, but no graphical powerhouse -- continues to outsell everything, everywhere. So we come to you, dedicated DS gamers after our own hearts, to ask ... how much do graphics really matter?
Japanese hardware sales, 6 November - 12 November: Supply and demand edition
You can hear the cries from the rooftops:"OMG the PS3 sold out rofl fastest in world!!!111oneone"
"It is teh greatest system evar!"
"Chim-chiminny chim-chiminny chim-chim, cheroo..."
And yes, it's true, the PS3 did sell out every single available unit within minutes of 12:01 AM last week, driving a majority of gamers, cold and hungry, empty-handed through the night. Certainly, we can allow ourselves a little bit of pride, though, right? Yes, as expected, the DS Lite outsold the brand-spanking-new PS3 by a considerable margin this week, despite the two-year-plus availability. Sony's Japanese allotment of the PS3 was nothing short of pathetic, and when those savvy Japanese gamers weigh the risks and rewards of the purchase, the DS Lite (which has reached the point of being able to walk up to a random eighty-year-old on the street and expect him to have at least one on him at any given moment) looks mighty shiny. Besides, they hate first-person shooters.
So hear this: we expect the DS Lite to outsell PS3 (in Japan) by a factor of 6.13 throughout the holiday season. That includes this week, and will run until the final full week in 2006. Make your guesses, ladies and gents, and we'll see who comes the closest!

New Sony PR guy compares DS and PSP
Dave Karraker, recently appointed as Sony's new senior director of corporate communications, took the time to take a knee with Gamasutra and gab gaming. At least, gaming from his company Sony's point of view. Important to people like us with the Nintendo logo etched into their underwear, however, is Mr. Karraker remarks concerning the DS.
GS: What about the handheld market, how important do you think that's going to be, going forward?
DK: I think handheld is incredibly important for us, particularly as we start developing more and more downloadable content. And I'm not just talking about games, I'm talking about entertainment content as well. Already the TiVo-to-go option for the PSP is turning into a huge hit for us, as people discover that they can take the shows they've already stored on their TiVo and put it on their PSP and while they're riding the bus to work or to school, they can watch television shows on the PSP, I mean that's huge. You can't do that on anything else.
So again, I think when you compare the two products, the Nintendo product versus our product, it's kind of apples and oranges. We're providing more of an entertainment system, and they're focused more on gaming.
Perhaps that's the issue for Sony? Is the company's lack of fresh gaming content on their system the reason why their handheld cannot seem to pull ahead? It's always been about the games and Nintendo has, along with their third-party support, proved that on the DS.
DS, Wii set to dominate the holidays
Japanese media giant Enterbrain recently surveyed retailers, as reported by Gamefront.de, about their expectations for game system sales this holiday season. We know you're not surprised, but right now? The show is all Nintendo.Retailers were asked, "Which next generation console do you think will sell better this Christmas?" The results lean heavily toward Nintendo -- 88% thought the Wii would boast better sales, and 11% settled on the PS3. We're not sure if it's worse that Microsoft wasn't even listed (perhaps because the Xbox 360 was released last year) or that Sony only garnered 11% in the poll.
The Wii loses, however, when it comes to all systems ... because 60% of retailers queried thought the Nintendo DS would be the top dog of all holiday console sales. Only 32.8% chose the Wii ... and a shocking 3.3% picked the PS3.
