Zelda modders take on the Xbox 360

You know what the Xbox 360 is missing? The Legend of Zelda, that's what. No worries, though; it looks like one faceplate-maker is here to save the day with this custom job designed to spruce up any 360. Even the greatly-feared RROD has to look a little better when framed by this baby.

For our tastes, we'd prefer something with a little less bronze and a little more gold, but overall, this faceplate is pretty nice -- and as of press time, you can pick it up on eBay for a mere $19.99, plus shipping. That's not a bad deal if you feel a driving urge to take your fandom to other systems.

Also, whoever is making those shield crests has got to love the modding community -- they're everywhere!

DS Daily: The others

If you're here, you probably own a DS. You may also own a Wii. But what else do you have sitting around the house? Gaming PC? Other consoles or handhelds? What do you not own that you'd like to have?

DS Daily: Variety - is it really the spice of life?

We're curious ... when you're not playing the DS, what are you playing instead? Are you filling your non-handheld time with the Wii, or even -- gasp -- another system? That's where this blogger tends to fall of late; between the Halo 3 Beta and the recent release of Catan on the Xbox Live Marketplace (we love the boardgame), there's a little variety in the gaming schedule of late. After all, for those of us who aren't Poké-fiends, the last few weeks have been a little more on the mediocre side of things ... which, considering our continuing obsession with Puzzle Quest, is probably a good thing for the ol' wallet.

But we do wonder what other games take your fancy. Perhaps World of Warcraft or another MMO? Are you one of the seven people who've bought a PS3? Next week, we figure Mario Party 8 will suck up tons of free time, so we're getting that non-Nintendo gaming in now. How about you? Are you sticking with your beloved DS, or do you sometimes branch out a little?

DS Daily: How much do graphics matter?

Handhelds have come a long way over the years, and even the GBA can churn out some impressive looking games, to say nothing of our beloved DS and a certain other handheld. Even so, graphics on handheld games don't really rival those in other consoles, for obvious reasons. For the past year, graphics have been one of the biggest topics in the gaming industry, and it's at the heart of some of the discussions concerning the next-gen console war. Despite all the attention given to graphics, the DS -- pretty, but no graphical powerhouse -- continues to outsell everything, everywhere. So we come to you, dedicated DS gamers after our own hearts, to ask ... how much do graphics really matter?

Donate DS games for cancer patient

Rich over at Xbox360Fanboy let us know about a very good cause. Turns out, a cancer patient by the name of Tori who is currently battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which is a form of blood cancer, is in need of help. Defeating the disease once when she was younger, she relapsed recently. In preparing for a huge stay in the hospital, as her immune system will be vulnerable to germs and infection following the bone marrow transplant, her mother says that in-between treatments, she is always playing her DS.

This is where you could come in. Her mother asks that anyone with defeated games or perhaps in possession of games which you particularly do not enjoy, you could help Tori through this ordeal by donating them to her. She's only 13 and in suffering something that no child should ever have to endure, she is certainly deserving.

We've included the original forum post asking for games into our post, past the jump.

DS, Wii set to dominate the holidays

Japanese media giant Enterbrain recently surveyed retailers, as reported by Gamefront.de, about their expectations for game system sales this holiday season. We know you're not surprised, but right now? The show is all Nintendo.

Retailers were asked, "Which next generation console do you think will sell better this Christmas?" The results lean heavily toward Nintendo -- 88% thought the Wii would boast better sales, and 11% settled on the PS3. We're not sure if it's worse that Microsoft wasn't even listed (perhaps because the Xbox 360 was released last year) or that Sony only garnered 11% in the poll.

The Wii loses, however, when it comes to all systems ... because 60% of retailers queried thought the Nintendo DS would be the top dog of all holiday console sales. Only 32.8% chose the Wii ... and a shocking 3.3% picked the PS3.

Japanese hardware sales, 24 July - 30 July: incredibly incalculable increase

Just as several wily commenters predicted last week, the original Xbox suddenly (and quite mysteriously) experiences a sales increase over its impressive tally of zero this week. The resulting percentage rise is so incredibly gargantuan and intimidating that it simply cannot be comprehended by the human mind, at least not without the aid of divine omnipotence or persistant alcohol poisoning. The ranking, according to number of units sold:

- DS Lite: 176,853 85,600 (32.62%)
- PSP: 42,604 6,666 (18.55%)
- PS2: 26,451 4,163 (18.68%)
- Xbox 360: 2,246 774 (52.58%)
- GBA SP: 2,229 724 (24.52%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,766 356 (25.25%)
- DS Phat: 1,530 4,814 (75.88%)
- Gamecube: 1,039 37 (3.44%)
- Xbox: 11 11 (infinite)
- GBA: 9 11 (55.00%)

Other points of interest this week include the Xbox 360's flirtation with the fourth position in the charts (and the huge gap between it and the PS2), the DS Phat's return to unpopular status and the vaguely demonic number of new PSP owners.

Japanese hardware sales, 12 June - 18 June: Phat's back

Quite possibly the only sane thing we've received from Japan this week, the Japanese hardware sales charts show it like it is -- no silly comparisons, half-truths or fuzzy mathematics in sight. The ranking, according to number of units sold:

- DS Lite: 141,487 9,460 (7.17%)
- PSP: 24,653 2,997 (13.84%)
- DS Phat: 22,748 21,377 (1559.23%)
- PS2: 20,737 1,756 (9.25%)
- GBA SP: 4,642 526 (12.78%)
- Xbox 360: 1,407 307 (27.91%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,294 360 (21.77%)
- Gamecube: 1,002 41 (4.27%)
- GBA: 20 10 (33.33%)
- Xbox: 15 5 (25.00%)

Aside from the soothing abundance of green, the most noticeable aspect of this week's chart is undoubtedly the DS Phat's performance, indicating either a surge in its popularity or a surge in desperation amongst those who couldn't track down a DS Lite. Perhaps it's time to import a black one from Europe?

Japanese hardware sales, 5 June - 11 June: outnumbered

The sheer volume of words being displayed on the front page of this blog is, quite frankly, entirely ridiculous. It's time for a change. It's time we inundate you with the accountant's best friend and the alphabet's greatest foe. It's time we unleash the Japanese hardware sales charts for the week ranging from 5 June to 11 June and thoughtfully observe their effects on the human body. The ranking, according to number of units sold:

- DS Lite: 132,027 3,587 (2,65%)
- PSP: 21,656 2,939 (11,95%)
- PS2: 18,981 468 (2,53%)
- GBA SP: 4,116 248 (5,68%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,654 384 (30,24%)
- DS Phat: 1,371 212 (18,29%)
- Xbox 360: 1,100 145 (11,65%)
- Gamecube: 961 163 (20,43%)
- GBA: 30 6 (20,00%)
- Xbox: 20 23 (53,49%)

For those perplexed by the friendly arrows, rest assured that their intention is only to indicate whether a platform's sales have increased or decreased since the last week (followed by the exact difference and a percentage). For those perplexed by the previous sentence, we politely suggest that you try attending school for once.

Ecko: DS > Xbox 360

In the June issue of Play magazine, Marc Ecko commented on the gaming industry again, on everything from the current state of things to some of his most favorite games of the past. What stood out the most, however, were his comments about loving his DS more than his Xbox 360.

Play: You're obviously a huge gamer. What are some of your favorite titles?

Ecko: I've been obsessed with games since childhood. Favorite titles... where do i begin? Atari, Colecovision, i had all of them. Yar's Revenge, whatever. The NES Mario, Sega's Sonic, of course. I remember being immediately hooked by Metal Gear Solid, and on PS2 GTA3. Lately i've been playing a lot of DS games, i've found found a lot of them more fun than the Xbox 360 launch titles. Although i have to admit Fight Night 3 is amazing. I could go on for days, i have billions of games. Oh yeah, World of Warcraft is beginning to ruin my life.

We're not huge fans of the guy, but we can't help but back up a statement as strong as that.
