Friday Video: Sonic Sez

The real sticking point with the idea of Sonic meeting a dignified end is assuming he had any dignity to start with. Here's evidence to the contrary: a "Sonic Sez" PSA from the cartoon starring Jaleel White. One of these appeared at the end of every episode, usually involving a supporting character doing something dumb and Sonic stepping in to be a jerk to them about it.

While some of the other segments focused on important issues like smoking, alcohol, and, uh, sexual harrassment, we're partial to this one, in which Sonic makes his personal stance known on the subject of whether or not it's good to be stupid.

Pet Alien: An Intergalactic Ten-dollar-palooza

Based on the the Cartoon Network show, Pet Alien: An Intergalactic Puzzlepalooza has you controlling five different aliens and managing their unique abilities over 80 levels to save their human friend, Tommy Cadle. The game received mediocre scores when it first hit stores last August, but a couple publications reviewed the Shin'en-developed puzzler favorably (Nintendo Power gave it an 8.0 out of 10).

GameStop currently has Pet Alien on sale at its online shop for $9.99, and they'll even ship it for free if you put in "SAVER" as a coupon code. Priced that low, this might be worth trying out. Even if cartoon-licensed games aren't your thing, this seems like a great, cheap gift for a younger sibling/kid/brat. Head past the post break for Pet Alien's trailer.

Make animations on your DS with FlickBook

The latest homebrew to catch our eye is this animation app called FlickBook. The concept is pretty simple, but fun: you draw a series of frames and make them into animated films.

The painting tools are very basic, so you won't be able to create detailed pictures like you would with Pocket Painter. The program is still cool, though, and seems less difficult than creating animations on your DS with Pictochat. We also like that we can export the films to our computers as AVI files. Besides, stick figure animations reminds us lovingly of Don Hertzfeld's (slightly NSFW) "Rejected" cartoons, which can only mean good things.

Eidos set to bring more classic cartoons to your DS

We can no longer ignore the signs: classic cartoons are clearly the hottest thing going for DS developers and publishers lately, and Eidos has announced that they are jumping on the bandwagon. And by "jumping on," we mean "attempting to seriously dominate the new market," as they're planning ten -- yes, ten! -- different titles based on classic Hanna-Barbera 'toons like Yogi Bear, the Flintstones, and the Jetsons. Let's just hope that they all end up looking as good as WayForward's Duck Amuck appears to be.

Japanese hardware sales, Apr. 30 - May 6: Deja vu edition

It's like a koala crapped a rainbow in my brain!I see you're back, kid. No surprise there. You've hit the rarest of the rare candies, and Level 100 wasn't enough for you? You're flying high for awhile, but then even that's not enough. Believe me, I know.

So let me tell you what's I've got here, kid. I call it shine. I have to grow 8,192 plants just to make one of these little pills, but kid, you've never seen a Psywave like this. It makes you stronger, faster, hell, even your skin changes color. It's luxury, it's lightning ....

So, you wanna score some--whoa, whoa, not so fast, kid! Last time was a freebie, a little icing before the cake. I'm gonna need something more than just sales charts. I'm gonna need some sort of tripped-up magical cartoon dream sequence ... no, make that two tripped up cartoon dream sequences. Oh, baby, yes. I am rollin'.

Don't forget those charts, too, kid, and remember ... you'll be back ...

US gets equipped with Mega Man Star Force cartoon

Mega Man
series fans have something else to look forward to in the near future, besides the never-ending stream of spinoffs and sequels. Viz Media has licensed the anime adaptation of the latest spinoff, Mega Man Star Force (Ryuusei no Rockman in Japan) for US audiences.

The story is some baffling thing about a human kid merging with an alien entity called Omega-Xis to become Mega Man, which we're sure will make more sense after we play the game. It makes us a little nostalgic for the sparse robot vs. robot storyline of the original Mega Man series, but not the original Mega Man cartoon. Do you think the cartoon will be good enough to promote a game with three versions? We make fun of Capcom for all the Mega Man overload, but we're huge fans and will no doubt fill our TiVos with episodes of this series.

Pokemon at the Gates of Fire

We don't know when it became in vogue to dub over Pokemon cartoon clips with audio from 300's trailers, but that appears to be what's hot on the streets nowadays. And when we say "the streets," keep in mind that we mean Youtube.

Some mashups are better than others, so we've pasted three of these animated adaptations for you to cast your hot-or-not votes on past the jump. If you've ever wanted to see the likenesses of King Leonidas and Mewtwo played out, today is your lucky day.

[Thanks, Ali!]

Powerpuff Girls adapted to anime, anime adapted to minigames

This news manages to be both supremely weird and completely banal at the same time. It's interesting conceptually, but mechanically, it's another licensed minigame set. Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z is the made-for-Japan adaptation of the Cartoon Network show, which was itself inspired by anime.

And just like you would expect for any anime, or, for that matter, anything popular in Japan (see also: food and walking) Powerpuff Girls Z is getting its own DS game. This has to be the most derivative game ever in terms of source material-- just surpassing the game adaptation of Street Fighter: The Movie.

Relive Super Mario Bros. 3, cartoon style

Looking to relive a cherished moment from your childhood? Maybe share it with others? Perhaps you just need material for a Mario-themed drinking game. We won't judge you. We'll just let you know that The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 is coming to DVD in the U.S. this June. And we mean the whole series run in one box set with lots of bonus features. If you can't get enough of classic Mario, this is one for you.

The perils of bathroom gaming

Bathroom gaming has been a popular pastime for as long as handheld consoles have been around. We like to imagine that even before our age of technology, kids spent their lavatory leisure time playing ball-in-a-cup or some other antiquated equivalent. That's how far back this honorable tradition goes.

As Infendo Radio host Scott Johnson can tell you, however, bathroom gaming does not come without its hazards. It's easy for things to go wrong while multi-tasking, but when you're sitting on the toilet is one of the worst times that can happen. Johnson has an entertaining, animated short describing his woeful experience. The Flash cartoon also serves as a warning to all you extreme bathroom gamers out there: playing New Super Mario Bros. in the work washroom might be fun, but if you aren't careful, it can quickly turn into a commode catastrophe.
